Rollout of the new dashboard and learning sessions experiences to all our customers

What a horrible, ugly, hard to use mess. I don’t understand what this redesign was supposed to accomplish.

Thanks @James_g_memrise

I think I’ve missed something…

Is Memworld going to be in addition to MemRise?

I support the choice to turn off the clock, which has been there for a long time, but not the removal. If they want to make no timer the default, that would be fine too, but the nature of this is that we find a way that works and develop strong patters, so it is jolting to have options taken away that are part of our routine. Plus, there was a pause button, so if you thought you were about to get it, you could pause it.

What I meant is that sometimes “Speed review” is suggested as a default action for the course. In that case I need to go to the list of all actions and select the one I want. I just wish I never had to do that.

Well, it may still be too early, but with the stylesheet changes I’ve posted previously in this thread I seem to find that my efficiency of learning was improved. I.e. it seems like now I memorize new words faster than with old version. It will probably take some time to get used to new style of learning before I can definitely say which version is better for me. But it seems like the new version is up to something good. So I may be the first person in this thread to say that “it is a tiny bit better than before”.

The “next up” button is broken in general. It can repeatedly suggest reviewing the same 2 difficult words even when there are hundreds of other words waiting to be reviewed, it suggests doing listening reviews on the courses without audio, and overall has a very weird behaviour:

You win. Or maybe you are the exception that proves the rule. My dashboard loads faster, so I am not a complete hater, but the point is that this is pretty bad to force on folks. I still haven’t seen a single post that begins to justify eliminating the possibility of using the old interface for a while longer if that is what you prefer.

I came across this thread while looking for info on premium membership, like others I can’t understand the removal of mems, it’s the biggest advantage memrise has over other apps for me.

I’m confused, the stickied post says they will be removed entirely some time this year, while further down the thread it seems to be not the case. Is there official information on whether they’ll be removed?

I’m only using community courses at the moment as there’s no official courses for my language, will they be removed also?

Are Memrise and Memworld going to be two different things? If I buy a lifetime membership, am I suddenly going to find Memrise all but abandoned in favour of whatever memworld is?

Mems are removed from lessons right now, they will remain on your profile page for the foreseeable future. We hope to have a feature that meets the needs of Mems in the future but we don’t have concrete deadlines or designs on that.
No one is removing community courses, we are actually investing a lot of resources into building a better platform to create community word lists.
No one is abandoning Memrise, features tested on Memworld will be integrated with Memrise.

It’s not a redesign in its general meaning. The purpose of this change was to cut off parts of the old website (like mems and built-in editor) and reallocate learning sessions to the app engine, or to a “shared software library” as James put it, so they can improve Memrise in the future. That’s why functionality is heavily reduced.

Let’s say this cut-off has its reasons, but then the question is what they are going to bring back, and then there’s a fact that they’ve been simplifying Memrise for already a long while.

And last, but not least, is that the Memrise team is historically bad in its communication with users. Even while doing this update and having a dialogue with users for the last two months they’ve managed to withhold important information about canceling other features besides mems.

By and large, this update might be a reasonable thing to do, but what we see is certainly not the way to do it and this will only sow further doubts about their intentions.

Hi @James_g_memrise, just another request for clarification. …

I have been under the impression that Mems have been temporarily removed while the team works on the current release.

What is written above makes me think a new mem-like product will be launched and everyone will have to create new Mems.
If this is the case then we will loose hundreds of valuable old Mems.

Please can you reassure us that all user-created courses will get their Mems back eventually.

Back to back review of “Learn New Words” is very tedious. I just “learned” 5 words by going through them and then the next time I choose learn new words, it gives me the exact same set.

Another issue I have come across for reviewing words. In the old UI, as you progressed through a review list your progress was sent back to the server as soon answered a question. Now, if you accidentally go back, all progress is lost. Very annoying if I was deep into 100 word long review. I have had to drop down to 10 word reviews to keep from wasting time having to redo a review list from scratch.

I was not the only one who really really hated the auto-accept feature when it was first introduced. A lot of us, if I recall correctly, thought it made Memrise significantly less effective. If they’ve removed it, that’s a good thing IMO.

I cannot say anything with100% certainty, because the reintroduction of mems must be weighted against all the possible features we could make to help people learn a language. But of course we built mems originally for a reason and still believe they are a valuable way to encode memories so hope to build a feature that meets the needs the mems feature was trying to meet. But if the old Mems are compatible with the new feature then of course we will use the existing ones, it would be crazy not to. I really can’t be more definitive because we haven’t designed it yet and I don’t want to promise anything I can’t be sure of.

Okay, so; I’m incredibly angry that this is happening.
I have a lifetime membership, so I have a VERY BIG REASON to be upset at my favorite MEMRISE feature being removed.

Which, in case you didn’t know, hasn’t been able on the web version for some time now, and I’ve been waiting patiently for it to come back.

Now, you decide to take it away.

WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE.

The changes are HORRIFIC. What were you thinking? Nothing fits on any screen, computer or phone. There is nothing improved with what you have done. Only losses. I will no longer recommend this program.

Could you restore the option to edit a word while we’re in a review session, display back the time and accuracy percentage at the end of a review session as well as streaks for every single word?
Thank you in advance

I will not be renewing my Memrise subscription due to both the Timer feature and the Mems feature being removed. Mems were a huge contributor to my success in learning new vocabulary, and the only reason why I stuck with Memrise. Please feel free to reach out to me when Mems have returned to the lessons. I will renew my subscription when they do.

MemTube, MemPod, MemLive, MemForum, MemMeet, and MemBot. All for a site with no Mems. But I suppose calling them Tube, Pod, Live, Forum, Meet, and Bot doesn’t quite feel like the branding is being driven home with a sledgehammer.
