Revising a course

What happens if a course that’s been released to the public is revised? Either by adding new questions/definitions, or by fixing existing ones.

They ought to download when people log out/back into the app, I think… At least, if people are learning offline. On desktop, I’d not have thought it would cause issues. I’ve used courses that have altered/updated before without me even noticing it initially; the number of words on the course changed but nothing seemed to break, or anything (I was just mildly confused). Plus, staff correct spelling/translation/audio on things quite a lot, to no ill effect… mostly.

Don’t just take my word for it, though. I’m sure there’s someone about more qualified to answer, as I’ve not had occasion to create a course at this point — just heard people talking 'bout it, before.

What I’ve seen the courses are updated from the online version. The mobile apps (iOS and Android) do not update the apps. The customer has to delete the app, reboot and reinstall the app to get the changes.

Most likely they have not fixed issues with synchronization of updated entries. Means plenty of corrected courses out there that never reach the hands of the course attendees.

Have you tried logging out and and to relogin on the mobile apps?

Not everyone is a Pro member and fully downloads courses for the OFFLINE mode.

It should be enough - in the online mode - if the apps just refresh their definition, if that may not be retrieved live when you access the course levels…I am just (wildly) guessing…

I’m a Pro user and have to do it. It’s my monthly ritual to remove the app (in iOS), reboot to make sure that preferences files are wiped out (especially any caches) and then install Memrise and the courses I have. I don’t use off-line mode, too unreliable for a longer time.

Anyone who does not do this with the mobile applications most likely miss any course fixes so they might learn totally wrong words and sentences.

Hi,

sorry I can not agree.

You cannot easily rollback to previous IOS app versions when you install new versions from the Apple store.

Obviously there are so MANY bugs going on in the bug IOS+Android sub-forums, that I would be very hesistent in installing new (the very latest) versions on a weekly or monthly basis.

Don’t “fix” a working system/app.

Hopefully your ritual includes making a BACKUP of your smartphone/tablet first???

If not, you will be lost when there are mission critical bugs which have been introduced in new mobile app versions!

You would have to wait until they are fixed…

All this mobile app stuff sounds to me like a big alpha/beta test anyways…too many complains by users about basic functionality which is not working right.

When staff removes basic functionality e.g the Japanese or Chinese word pronunciation “show-after-test” which users needed/wanted to have to know how to say a word (it is still there on the web portal), without any other good implementation alternative, you might be lost as a language learner!

This is one of the reasons why I was using a stone old Android app version on KOPlayer learning new words here and there with the Android emulator (half-planting of 10 words concept across multiple levels until they are fully planted in six steps to avoid overfilling my backlog queue):
I do not use the “classic review” mode on the mobile apps.

…(…)…

If I really wanted to use the mobile apps without multiple-choices and any given (letter or word) hints but with self-rated answer buttons instead of typing (cloze deletion), I would probably export all my Memrise courses to AnkiSRS and sync the flashcards from the AnkiSRS Windows application to AnkiDroid (Android) or AnkiMobile (commercial, IOS, supported by the main developer in their forum).

Kind of sad when end users don’t want to upgrade apps due to bugs and have to update in order to get course updates. The best would be to have a QA tested product that updates courses.
