Review is not random

I think that this is a general bug, but I only tested on the HSK course. Why, assuming that I do not have any word to review, whenever I press the review button, I always get the same choices? There are more than 1200 words in my course. Wouldn’t it be nice to have an option with a general review and not just those words that are supposed to be reviewed soon?

This began happening with me a couple of weeks ago in the courses I use. . . I really hope this gets fixed.

I don’t use the ‘over-review’ feature much anymore, but I’ve been noticing this a lot with the speed review, which I always use on finished courses when I didn’t get enough items to complete my daily goal.

It seems to always use the items that are due to come up next in the regular review cycle. This 1: makes it redundant and pointless to do multiple sessions until those items come up in regular review (aside from getting the points), which may take quite some time in some cases, and 2: gives me an unwanted ‘cheat sheet’ on my next review batch, which is a much bigger deal to me, personally, as it completely undermines the spaced repetition system.

I’d love to see it get mixed up a lot more than it is now.

This x1000. Took a 6 month break from Memrise, wanted to come back and work on my words, did the review, next day same words… uggh… next day same words! Even words that I knew and get right everytime, it’s the same set out of 4000 words I only get the same 50. I started blocking each word now to force it to give me new words, but this is very broken. I’m about to dump Memrise and not renew if there is no way to review old words and you only get a set of 20. Please fix!

Hi there, sorry to hear this. Can you confirm a few things:

  • Which course(s) does this occur with?
  • Are all of the ~4000 words ready to be reviewed? You can check this by looking at the label over Classic Review mode after you click on the button with three dots.

Can you also try these steps:

  • Disable Adblock, ad-blocking technology or any extension that blocks cookies on memrise.com
  • Clear cache and cookies, update your browser to the latest version and restart it
  • Ensure Javascript is enabled on your browser/on https://app.memrise.com/

If the issue persists please let me know and confirm which device and browser you’re using.

Best,
A.

It’s not for one course, but for one language. You can see it says 3871 words for review, but they are always the same ones, even if I answer them for a week straight.

Hi,

Thanks for getting back to me.

Unfortunately I still can’t reproduce this.

Could you confirm you’ve tried all of these steps:

  • Disable Adblock, ad-blocking technology or any extension that blocks cookies on memrise.com
  • Clear cache and cookies, update your browser to the latest version and restart it
  • Ensure Javascript is enabled on your browser/on https://app.memrise.com/

If the issue persists after trying the above please let me know and confirm which device and browser you’re using.

Best,
A.

So, I tried in Firefox… seems to work fine, but my main browser, the latest Edge, is the one that keeps repeating the same set of words.

This is on Windows 10 20H2

Thanks for the extra info :slightly_smiling_face: I’ve created a ticket for our team, who will take a look asap (Internal code: QA-980). Unfortunately I do not have a timeframe for the fix right now.

In the meanwhile, please consider using Firefox to review your courses.

Thanks for your patience.

Now Firefox is no longer random either, it’s as if once I do a review in a browser and then go back it will always use the same last used words.

Hi, thanks for letting me know.

Sadly we haven’t received any other reports of this and we’ve couldn’t reproduce it yet. :disappointed:

However, I’ve now raised this issue again to the relevant team, who will take a look asap.

In the meanwhile, please try reviewing your items course by course instead.

Apologies for any inconvenience.

Best,
A.
