Reading and writing in Hebrew

Does someone have any spelling tricks or tips on which letter to write when there are two different letters for the same or very similar sound? (If its the same or just similar depends an your accent or dialect :wink: )
Like with โ€œchโ€ sound. If you have a word with that sound is it possible to know which letter to use in writing: ื› vs ื—?
โ€œchโ€: ื› vs ื—
"t": ื˜ vs ืช
"s": ืฉ vs ืก
"k": ืง vs ื›
not to mention the vowelsโ€ฆ :sweat:

Actually with the โ€œtโ€ there are some spelling tips I know already:
words that came from other languages are with ื˜
ื˜ืœืคื•ืŸ-telephone, ื˜ืœื•ื™ื–ื™ื”-television, ืกื˜ื•ื“ื ื˜ -studentโ€ฆ
When in doubt it is suggested to use a ืช since itโ€™s more common. :slight_smile:

Do you have more like these? Letโ€™s collect all! :slight_smile:

Like with English, a lot of it is kind of arbitrary, based on the history of the word. However, if you know the roots, that can often help. For example, the word for โ€œa letterโ€ (as in the thing you send by mail) is ืžื›ืชื‘ with a โ€œchโ€ sound for the ื›, but if you realize that itโ€™s one of the words from the root ื›-ืช-ื‘ which all relate to writing - most of which have a โ€œkโ€ sound for the ื› - then you can easily remember that this word has a ื› not a ื—. For example, โ€œI writeโ€ = โ€œืื ื™ ื›ื•ืชื‘โ€ (ani kotev), with a โ€œkโ€ sound. If you remember that there are a bunch of words related to writing that all have that ื›-ืช-ื‘ and many of them have a k sound, then you realize that ืžื›ืชื‘ is probably one of those.

Thank you, cos, itโ€™s great! I appreciate it.
Do you maybe have more of these?

I love Hebrew, it has so much depth and meaning behind the words. Itโ€™s not just a bunch of letters after each other, they are there for a reason. It is the second best language on the planet from this point of view! :slight_smile: I love it!
