Problem with Japanese course, "It's over 9000! words with audio"

Trying ‘turn off audio questions for 30 minutes’ has not effect whatsoever.

I have been able to ascertain that only ‘learning new words’ is impacted. Speed, classic reviews and difficult words all behave normally (in Memrise).

I also tried to turn off audio questions in my settings with the same results.

The course behaved perfectly for the last 20 days, today included. Unless the creator has made changes the issue is very much Memrise related.

@alanh, @DW7

Do either of you have any idea why this course is behaving like this?

Do you think it is a memrise-related bug or is the problem possibly caused by the way the course was created in the first place?

I have also invited @Xlaech .

Sorry not knowing Japanese I’d find it difficult to follow. Hopefully the Creator (or a Contributor) can give some clarification.

Have you gone back and tested it on MemRise?

I wonder if it’s anything to do with keyboard characters?

Maybe this complaint needs moving to Decks bugs then?

Sorry. Nothing springs to mind. I can’t see the course in question on the user’s profile.

The characters she uses after her name above 異世界図書館 match those of the person Amanda identified and means “Different world library” but I agree I don’t see User 111103 but that may be the ‘English’ translation’?

OK. Got it now. I was looking at the learning profile for user 111103. It looks like the user has two accounts.

I have just tried learning the first few items in this course on Decks and it seems to be behaving normally.

I only have one account.

The issue still persists, only pronounciation questions :

On https://www.memrise.com/home/ and Chrome.

we can meet on appear.in if that helps.

Hi,

Sorry. We are fellow users just trying to help. We are not Memrise staff.

I´m now getting a bit confused. Your forum ID in this thread started as “111103” but has since changed to “111102”! That’s odd!

When I was looking for the course you are having problems with, I looked at the Memrise learning profile for “111103” which listed two courses being learned, neither of which were the ‘problem’ Japanese course. I then looked at the learning profile for 異世界図書館 and found the correct course. Strangely, when I look for the profile for “111102”, it says that page doesn’t exist!

I’m sorry but I can’t currently think why you are only getting pronunciation questions. When I tried learning the first five words in Level 2, I was taken through the usual learning/testing sequence (translation with audio, multiple choice, typing test). I wasn’t seeing only pronunciation.

One of the other posters on this thread has tagged the course creator so, hopefully, they will come here soon and be able to help you. I’ll come back, if I get any bright ideas.

Thank you for providing images. I have figured out the problem. The problem is due to the way the course creator has set up level 17. If you go to the level 17 preview page (HERE), you will notice that to the left of every word is an audio icon. If you go to any other level preview page you will notice that there are no such icons, but instead the English translations. However past level 17, there are not English translations or audio icons. The course appears to be incomplete beyond level 16, and I’m not sure it is functioning at all past level 17. You will be instead greeted with an error message when attempting to learn new words.

HERE is the course forum for the course (the link in the course description seems to be broken). Other users have indicated that the course is indeed incomplete, and it seems to have already been acknowledged by the course creator.

That’s very helpful, thanks!

Well, I stand corrected. Since the bug just after I tried Decks I thought the issue had to do with an update.

Thank you for sorting this out.

Guess I can’t do anyhting about the time I have sunk in this course for nothing but that’s through no fault of yours. :frowning:

Have you checked out the forum for the course? There seems to be a creator and a contributor so maybe someone will respond if you ask about this problem?

And may I change the heading of your thread? Now that it is clear that the problem has nothing to do with the memrise team?

Of course. Thanks for the advice.

Hey,

i am not using memrise to learn Japanese any more. I can make any of you a contributer, if you want to change things in the course.

Greetings,
Xlaech

That’s some serious enthusiasm.

Sadly I need a way to run through a lot of vocab fast before my trip to japan, not a long hard slog carefully adding a few words each day so I already switched courses.

If things were as simple as Xlaech having a csv to import into the course I guess it would be done by now. :smirk:

Thanks all the same to both of you for taking the time to post.
