Private Messaging

Are there any plans to introduce private messaging at some stage in the future so that people can communicate on a one-to-one basis? It would need to include a way to block unwanted attention, of course.

As an update for anyone who is interested, I just received my “Basic User” badge which is described as:

“This badge is granted when you reach trust level 1. Thanks for sticking around a little while and reading a few topics to learn what our community is about. Your new user restrictions have been lifted; you’ve been granted all essential community abilities, such as personal messaging, flagging, wiki editing, and the ability to post multiple images and links.”

I’ve now earned “Welcome” for the second time (first was yesterday), but still not “Basic User”. Do you know what you did to get that one?

Heheh! As soon as I made this comment, I got a notification and got “Basic User” Maybe all I had to do was ask.

Now that I have Basic User, I was able to send you a private message. If you got it, I guess that answers the question! Now we just have to invite people to the forum if we want to be able to message them, and maybe then also wait long enough for them to earn Basic User. Or maybe not.

Just discovered that, if you click on the “Basic User” panel in the “Badges” list, you can see who has been “awarded” it - and when. It’s the same for the other badges.

Others have probably already found this.

Just earned the badge too, it also entails the possibility to post multiple images :tada:

but “trust” this takes you to the discourse.org community. And what if one wants to remain only “inside” memrise ? (i have no interest on “all rights” in some wild forum that i don’t want to visit)

Does anyone know how many posts are needed in order to get this or other features?

You get access to it after you’re a ‘Basic User’. Not sure of the exact requirements, but if you’re even slightly active you should get that within a few hours or a day. Memrise may choose to change the requirements.

Yup. I got it just after I posted that.

ok, but most people in here are old memrise users (@cos is probably the “oldest”; I am on memrise since 2013). “We” rather “know” each other.
Not that I’d think that PM is such a gorgious feature. Old, “verified” users can get “nasty” as well. We know this as well :expressionless:

whoopes sorry, i copied that from the “discourse” moderator, not rom arete_hime… how come that my reply went to arete, my bad

So basically, we have to obtain a “trust” level of 1 before we can actually send private messages? It’s nice to be able to send messages directly, but this trust system is not so convenient (especially since the forum is not that easy to access if you’re not specifically looking for it).

Well, compared to the previous system, this should be better.

Is trust related with Memrise points ? Does anyone know ?

Onesmy, the trust system helps to weed out spammers who typically sign up for a forum and immediately start spamming through either URLs or private messaging. Spammers don’t tend to wait out five posts to start spamming. They’ll either not bother to sign up or give up before they get their five posts.

From that perspective, I have zero problem with the trust initiative.

No, it’s related to the number of forum posts a user has. I don’t know the exact number, but it’s something like three or five before you have private messaging privileges.

You are right actually. I wasn’t too sure about that yesterday, then I took a better look at the conditions required to obtain a level 1 trust. Just reading the forum for 10minutes, opening a few topics and writing a few posts are not huge requirements, and it happened without me even noticing that I was no longer considered a newbie by the system.

So if I post here a couple of times I should be able to send a PM? Good.

Great to finally have private messaging. Useful for contacting course creaters.

Although based on how nasty some discussions can get, I’m glad there’s a block button.

Hi Matt and others,

I always think the best way to contact Course Creators (and Contributors) is to contact them directly in the Course Forum. The creator can then easily go to the course (on another tab) and check the issue.

The originator can later delete the thread if s/he wishes thus making it private.

I do however think that the Creator/ Contributor should be allowed to delete an offensive thread in a Course Forum.

Can the MemRise team consider this, please?
