Nobody here is whinging about points. Only that Memrise made it 30 times more difficult just to keep your streak going (if you’ve finished a course). If they didn’t want to encourage daily learning via motivation through streaks, they wouldn’t have it.
Memrise ‘features’, such as the learning streak, often appear to be lacking any thought about implementation past ‘‘woo-hoo new feature, bells and whistles happy happy’’. And that feels unlikely to change in general as well as for individual features.
My advice - let the streak go and start a new course.
You’ve done really well (whats it 200 days now?) keeping the streak, but is there any real benefit to maintaining it now?
My control freak/anal retentive nature appreciates that it can be hard to let go - but years of dealing with Memrise has taught me to care less , and ultimately I think it’ll be less stressful and more productive to give up now!
(insert encouraging comment that doesn’t sound patronizing)
Good advice leggi!
I’ll probably lose them all next month when I go overseas (but I’ll try not to, lol).
By the way, I do continue learning new courses. I’m not just keeping a single streak going.
All the best.
Daily streak won’t go above 365. So how to maintain it. Make a course which has some items you want to remember, but you don’t know yet. Add 36 entries in a week and you’ll get a course with 1872 entries which will be enough to keep the streak, if you learn all of them. And if there’s no new words to learn or review, just keep adding… it’ll be like a course of everything that matters to you. That way you’ll maintain your streak, get points and learn new things. No need to restart.
Thanks @Atikker. I think your idea will suit me. I have a little private course with some of my ‘difficult’ words but I haven’t been spending time in that of late. I can use that for my ‘base’ and build on it - the benefit will be actually LEARNING these words so they stick in my brain!
Hi guys.
I have an excel file with my difficult words but this sounds like a great idea.
How do I create a private course for myself?
Hi @blutach, I don’t immediately recall how I did it. Can check on desktop when I get home, but can say it wasn’t difficult. In the interim someone else will likely answer your question, if not, I will later.
MB Maxine.
OAM: Tough luck for the Campbell sisters :((
Bonjour again @Blutach. I just googled ‘creating a private course’ and found the following, http://feedback.memrise.com/knowledgebase/articles/525179-set-course-to-private-hide-course
That should work.
Thanks Maxine but how do I create a course in the first place
I’ll get there lol
On the website… Click on ‘courses’ at the top of the page, then the ‘create a course’ green button should appear at the top of the next page.
Any course technically private when it’s first created so it won’t show to anyone else unless you go into the ‘details’ section and change the status to public.
Thank you all so much. I’ve been looking for that sort of thing. I’ll try it when I get home.
Thanks again
I used your link anyway Maxine.
One last question. Is there a way I can randomise the word order. At this stage, I have them in alphabetical order. I know I can manually move them around, but this is very laborious. Is there a setting that teaches words in a random order (I have them all in only 1 level, so far).
One useful tip to remember is that, by adding at least a second level to your course, it opens up the “databases” button to you.
In addition to the guidance in the “Course Creation” area of the “FAQ” section of the website (that Maxine_Downunder pointed you towards, you’ll find some other useful hints and tips here.
Sorry, but I’m not aware of any quick way to randomise your word order.
Once again @blutach I’m slow getting back to the forum - my apologies. Yes, it’s extremely laborious. I recall that from when I completely revised a course which was basically handed over to me. Great advice from @alanh, thanks, I’ll take that on myself.
Thanks again to everyone.
I might divide levels alphabetically, maybe 8 levels. It’ll make it easier to slot new words in, too.
One thing I’ve noticed on review. When there’s 3 audio tests (the 3 circles), they always say the same thing. Is there a setting or something I can do to fix this? I’ve noticed this on some other course, too, but only occasionally.
Thanks in advance.
