I’ve also been primarily using Memrise for learning kanji and vocab.

For kanji, I highly recommend this course:

It teaches the kanji with English meanings, which I found helpful for getting them to initially stick in my head when I didn’t know much Japanese, and there are tons of helpful mems. What I did was work through this course as I did my first few vocab courses, learning the vocab with kana only first, then learning the kanji forms as I was introduced to them through the kanji course.

As J12321 suggested, it may be a good idea to familiarize yourself with radicals first. For the record, I didn’t, and I think I did alright, but I do think it may have been easier for me if I had. I decided to brush up on radicals later, and this is the course I went with:

As far as tricks for memorizing things go, I’ve found the mems to be incredibly useful for the kanji and vocab, but as I got more familiar with the kanji’s readings, I’ve found myself relying on mems a lot less. New words eventually start to just feel more logical as you go, and the word’s kanji and reading will often naturally go hand in hand.

You should also get better as you go in being able to think of the Japanese words more literally, rather than relating them entirely to the English translation. For example, 異論 is a word I learned recently. I’ve seen both kanji used in other words before, so the reading “い・ろん” is easy for me to figure out. And rather than thinking of it only as “objection”, which is one of the English translations, I think of what the kanji literally mean as well, which is something closer to “different opinion.”

More than anything, just remember that even when you make mistakes, you’re still learning. I used to have a lot of trouble with many of the kanji in that course, but each time I missed one, it stuck in my head a little better, and now the vast majority of them are fairly easy for me. Just keep at it!

I hope that helps, and good luck with your learning!

I recommend learning the free kanji and vocab on WaniKani, as there are some very useful mnemonics.
