I like memrise, really. But I have one big problem. I’ve created a course for myself and added a picture column, where I (you won’t be surprised) upload pictures for words. But I don’t see any of the pictures I uploaded in my Android app. All it says is: “Alas! No mem created for this…”. It is a problem because I need to learn on my way in public transport and it is not so efficient without pictures. Please, help me.
Thank you in advance.
Have you set the testing direction so that it prompts with the title you have given your picture column?

Uploading photos to a column in the database is not the same as creating a mem. Mems are created by any Memrise user working on the course, while on a learning or preview screen… or after getting an answer wrong in a review session. There can be several mems made by several users for each entry in the course.
In contrast, pictures uploaded to the database by a course creator (or contributor) should probably show up during a learning session, especially if the column is marked as an Attribute, and the checkbox Show Attributes is checked. If you want the pictures to show before you answer, you may have to also hover over the name of the column, click the paperclip, and select “Show at Tests” in the popup box.
I’m aware that the app behaves differently than the website, and I primarily use the website. But, I believe I remember reading in the forums somewhere that in the app sometimes only the first attribute column is displayed. It’s possible that this issue is effecting your course.
I don’t think this next idea is what you’re asking about, but just in case it is… here goes: If what you’re aiming for is to see a photo of a horse, and then enter the Spanish word “caballo” as your answer (for example), you’ll need to navigate to the course editing page (with level numbers, not the whole database), click Show/Hide to expand a level, and then click the paperclip just below the blue bar with the level number. Change Prompt with English (or whatever the current prompt is) to Prompt with Pictures (or whatever you named the column with your photos). I believe that only columns that are not attributes can be selected.
If you need your pictures column to be an attribute, but it isn’t, you may have to add a new column, set it up as an attribute, and then upload your pictures to the new column. If your pictures column is already an attribute, but you need it to be a testable column, you’ll have to add a new column that is not set up as an attribute and add the photos again.
Does this mean that it is not possible to reconfigure a column from an attribute to testable and vice versa? That would be great if that were possible.
if you want to see those pictures you need to add them to mems not while you are editting the course but while you are taking it
I agree—course creation would be easier if you could change a column to an attribute or testable after creating it, but as far as I could tell while writing my earlier response, Memrise currently doesn’t work that way.
(Sorry for the delay in response; I’ve been very busy lately.)
Thank you very much for your detailed answer. I am sorry for the late reply.
Unfortunately, the column with images can’t be an attribute (in adding new column dialog the checkbox for “As attribute?” disappears after selecting “Images” as type).
I also noticed a strange behavior of the site: when I check the “Show after tests” option in editing “Pictures” column and click “Save” and open the editing dialog again, I see that the option is no longer checked (that is, the site discards my change, while leaving any other changes applied).
I have columns for words, their definitions, audios and pictures. My initial intent is that I want the corresponding image for a word to be shown during learning sessions. On the website I can see the word I am currently learning, the definition for it and the picture I added to the "Picture"
column for it. In the Android app I can see only the first two (word and definition).
I have just figured this out: in order to make pictures appear in the app during learning sessions, I need (as Atikker pointed out) to add these pictures as mems.
I still don’t understand why the site and the app behave that differently.
I would have saved an hour if I had listened to Atikker first, before I went to figure this out on my own. Good note for the future
I didn’t realize that picture columns couldn’t be attributes…

I suppose that the point to have pictures in the database course, is to show them when learning, whether it is attribute that is tested or just an attribute wih extra information.
Sounds to me like a bug or a design oversight. Or just a misunderstanding of what pictures are for.
Can memrise fix this/help with this?
I read this very quickly and don’t have much experience with this, so forgive my ignorance, but perhaps logging out and back in to the app fixes the problem? I think you need to do that after adding an extra column, or changing its testing behaviour.
I would like to ask if someone solved the problem of pictures. I added extra column for pictures but the pictures canąt occure during the android app learning sesion. I need this because sometimes the answer should be the picture. Any ideas?
