Phantom word prohibits me from learning new vocabulary

I have my own vocabulary list that I regularly update. It is the following:

Since recently I have the problem that I cannot learn any new vocabulary! It seems there is a “phantom word” in Level 41 (the one called Lesson 31), since if I look at the details of the level then I already learned all the words in there, but the green progress bar still claims that one of the words was not learned yet. When I try to learn the claimed remaining vocabulary of this level then I get an error message stating:

Whoops. Could not load the session. Sorry.

Where did the phantom word come from, and how do I get rid of it?

Thanks for any help!

I had a similar problem with one of my courses. It actually helped me to delete a (random?) word, save and later put the word back in. I have no explanation for that but it helped me. (Causing this in the first place seemed my ignoring and later “unignoring” some words in a given level).

Good luck!

hmmm that unfortunately did not seem to work. I still have the same issue as before.

I had a similar issue with another course, with the same message, and I tried ignoring the words that make that issue. Maybe you could do that, or even ignore that entire level.

well I cannot really ignore the word that’s causing the trouble, since it’s a phantom word, which does not appear in the list of words at all. It just claims that there is another word to be learned in that level, but it does not actually exist. Ignoring the level is also not really an option since I need to learn these words for my language course :stuck_out_tongue:

How about creating another level then put those words inside the new level. Then delete the old level.

Your progress should still remain the same, you wouldn’t need to learn those words again.

Yes indeed! That worked! I copied all the words and deleted the old level. Quite a hack, but it works. And you might think that memrise would like to repair such a bug. But no reaction from sending in bug reports whatsoever.

Thanks for the help!

Believe it or not, I work at Memrise. :sunglasses:

This bug was tackled a long time ago. This bug may still exists in older courses, but shouldn’t appear in newer ones.

however, it does appear in (very) new courses (for ex in this: https://www.memrise.com/course/1458549/bahasa-malaysia-melayu-daily-conversations/)

I’ve had a look at the course you link and it doesn’t experience the same issue as this topic.

The bug reported in this topic was relating to the number of words being incorrect by 1.

For example my screenshot shows 2 words inside the level, however only 1 word is present.

Could you explain what appears in your course? As I don’t think its has any relation to this topic.

Hi @andemil,

Sadly many of us have all experienced this and in the past I asked for help from the MemRise team. I see Joshua has had a look.

Try going into the database rather than the level and see if the phantom word is there. If you can identify it there, then delete it.
