For people like myself who just want to learn how to read and speak Russian, the typing & spelling questions are so slow and laborious.

Thank you for the request, unfortunately this isn’t currently on our roadmap of things to do soon, as we don’t get that many requests for it and we believe that spelling a word is a very effective way to embed memories, the difficulty is what makes it effective.
However, we did recently add the hint functionality on web to make it easier to get through typing tests if you get a bit stuck, and if you use our mobile apps you’ll find that in classic review mode there is a significantly lower proportion of typing tests than on web
