You need to get rid of “rape” as a word to work on. Seriously. This should not even need a discussion. Sure, I happen to be working on languages with my six year old daughter, which was very awkward and disconcerting when that word came up. I think learners can figure out that word from other formats if it is a “ need to know” word.
You could have checked the course for suitability beforehand. You chose to start this community-created course https://app.memrise.com/course/15879/kanji-damage-full-course/ which contains a lot of words that are too difficult or abstract for a six year old anyway. You can ignore the unwanted words but I don’t know it the method will still work then.
There are many other courses to choose from. Or stick to the official courses, they do contain words like murderer and gun though.
Hi @SteveandJune, I was about to say almost the same thing as @duaal.
Are the words on the official MemRise 1 to 7 courses or a community course?
I have found a few inappropriate words (even in an official course) and I just “ignore” them.
There may be an age limit on MemRise (I can’t remember) but in any case I’d suggest you look at each level beforehand and ignore any words you consider inappropriate for a child.
Hope our suggestions help you continue to learn and benefit from MemRise.
PS I see this thread is posted on the Community Courses area.
I am not sure how I could have checked the course for suitability beforehand. Are all the words listed ahead of time? I might have had less of a problem with gun or murderer as the idea of bad guys and the tools of their trade (and guns as a right, what have you). We are having a great time with Memrise and will take our chances moving ahead. I apologize if my sensitivity or tone puts you or members of the program on the defensive. When the word came up it was a shocker compared to everything else. The six year old is very intelligent which can have drawbacks. So moving forward I will be keeping that in mind. My post simply pointed out a word, your response in the first sentence questioned my parenting, ( I think?) but no harm. I would really like to support your program, continue learning and would gladly give positive testimony somewhere down the line as my daughter and I gain proficiency. Thank you for providing this program that we will be treasuring.
PPS
This course by @BenWhately (a MemRise founder) may be more appropriate - but again, may I suggest you check each level at time.
May I suggest you look at the course on a computer.
Then you will clearly see each level and once you go into a level, you will have the opportunity to tick words to ignore. Just remember to hit “save” at the bottom of the level.
The computer description is often a lot fuller than the short description on the App (often not even present as not a requirement in the past) and the description may give you a clue.
ATB learning so many languages - amazing!
I cannot find it now, but Memrise used to have a minimum age requirement - if i remember correctly, 13 years of age?
I mentioned that I haven’t seen a list of words but I don’t mean to say that they have lax in presenting them. I have not found them perhaps due to not searching properly. Actually, I did not search at all. I hope to continue with this program, we are enjoying it immensely.
Thank you, I need to do my homework.
I will check on that. My daughter has been assessed with a 19 year old reading level, but that doesn’t cover other aspects of maturity and what we share with our children. I thank the community and Memrise administrators for your quick responses and I will do my best with community standards.
Not questioning your parenting but firmly assigning the responsibility for your child back to you. Over the years I guess I’ve seen just too many demands by parents for immediate removal of content, on this website and on other learning sites.
Memrise now only promotes their official language courses but this website has always been open to all kinds of content created by the community. There are also many courses about art, math and science, geography, history, religion, etc. And many, many user-created courses about languages, some of which are dedicated to swear words or dating. It would be a shame if Memrise would feel it would have to check and remove courses because of complaints.
Others have already told how to check and ignore words in a course. So now you can make your own choices in using the material.
Thank you. I understand your point of view and experience. And I will look into official Memrise courses while continuing with these.
