Oh come on people, you can’t really be that thick?

The mem is clearly there for no other reason than to intentionally offend or interrupt users who are studying the names of God in Islam. And you’re cool with that? That is the only purpose of that mem. It was made by someone who never learned a single word on Memrise. It’s the mem that needs judging, certainly not a valued Memrise user & course creator who found the mem to be inappropriate.

Memrise has removed (or hidden) the Mem, and that was absolutely the right thing for Memrise to do. Not because someone might be offended, but because when possible, Memrise should simply decline to be used as a venue for the propagation of bigotry or hate.

I thank Mahirislam for taking the time to report the Mem, and I thank Memrise for being so quickly responsive and declining to host this message.

The Terms of Use in Memrise state:

"We actively monitor User Content Posted via the Service and we reserve the right to remove any User Content that is Posted and is deemed by us in our reasonable opinion, or has been notified to us as being the following (“Inappropriate Content”):

Content that is offensive, indecent, objectionable, tasteless, harmful, hateful, threatening, unlawful, defamatory, infringing, abusive, inflammatory, harassing, vulgar, obscene, fraudulent, invasive of privacy, or publicity or human or personal rights, or any content that is racially, ethically , sexually, politically or otherwise humanly unacceptable;"

This mem clearly fell within those terms, and it was either hidden or removed. Good for Memrise for acting so quickly on behalf of their own Terms Of Use.

The reason why it is not offending to me is because in the name of Allah many people were and are being killed. It is the same with in the name of God many people were killed and still are being killed. It is, unfortunately, human history. This is how I see the mem.

GabrieleCramer-Knebe - Serious question. Why do you think anyone should care whether or not you find the mem to be offending?

Sure, if the course was on human history and critical analysis of the historical role of religion in wars, etc etc then maybe somebody would make a mem about that if that was something that needed a mem to build understanding. That’s not what happened here.

I am just telling you why I am … in your words … so thick. Don’t ask a question if you don’t like the answer.

With all due respect to your right to hold an opinion (and not to interfere with the interaction between you and @lurajane) what I found objectionable about the mem was that it was stating the Allah was the “torturer of millions of human beings”, not the followers of Allah. That is a very serious charge to cast into the public realm, in any type of media format. And as such, I believe it clearly fits into several of the categories that Memrise deems unacceptable (per their Terms of Use). I apologize for interjecting into your discussion.

this question can be set to anyone… including yourself

because she’s a user of memrise, and I don’t get it why her opinion (does not mean i endorse it, or not) is less important than yours, or mine…

i am not sure about religious/divinity courses on a site such as memrise - sooner or later they will “offend” someone. I have my own “history of some religion” courses, but that is history and not religion … probably the user having posted that is “normal” user who made an extra account just for that mem…

I agree. The mem is pulled because the content clearly violates Memrise’s terms of use. Memrise presumably chooses, (at least when the choice is easily implemented without burdensome costs), to not be a venue for hate.

It is silly for anyone to say, “I am not offended by A. Therefore, A is not offensive.” The logic of that argument fails.

well I am offended by the fact that you are offended by the truth that is said in that mem.

1/ this is obviously not a mem; the purpose of that statement is to provoke some people.
2/ you are stating that the truth is said in that mem, how can you say it is the truth? It is obvious that you know nothing about islam and you never read the quran.
3/ As stated above, the purpose of this course is to learn Allah’s names and attributes, it has nothing to do with history or discussing people’s beliefs.

of course, this is the message brought by the media:

  • when a muslim commits a crime, they always point out to his religion (like if islam asks people to commit crimes)
  • when a non muslim commits a crime, they say: he has a mental disorder.
