New layout feedback thread |CIVIL DISCUSSION|

The encouragement is that if you stick to Community courses (not the Official MemRise ones) you will only be able to use Decks soon, and that is quite acceptable or even pleasant.

I use both community and official courses myself :frowning:

Very much agreed. I could get used to the layout changes, but the colours, especially the baby-poop yellow, are literally, physically repulsive.

Here’s my “GPS” (Good, Problematic, Solutions) on the new look on the app specifically (since that’s what I use 95% of the time):

For me what’s good is the simplification of the graphics and the overall movement toward more boldness in colour.

What’s problematic is that colour scheme overall is distracting and, well, the word repulsive has come up, and I have to agree. I guess that’s why it’s distracting me. The font used in the answer keyboard is nice and bold but for some reason the letter l (lower-case L, that is) is a much lighter weight than the other letters. I find that distracting. I very much dislike the new look for the flowers in the top right corner; they don’t look much like flowers and watching them bloom doesn’t make me happy any more. Beauty makes me happy. It is not there.

Solutions: scale it back. Please! I’m all for evolving the design and I like bright colours. But please just scale back what’s been done: re-tune the colour palette to something more harmonious, less loud; re-draw the graphics to be less like kindergarden collage. Like I said, I used to feel happy when I saw the flowers bloom!

Hope this is helpful!

i disagree. i dont know what age-range you are refferring to with young, but with my 19 years, im not old yet i would have to say. furthermore, it is sad that many things in this world are starting to become more and more “soul-less” or just too simple and bland. games, music and all kinds of things that can be seen as creative works. i think they should most certainly revert back to the old design regardless. the community should be valued and taken into consideration, beforehand, in such mattters.

I too feel like it’s slapped together. The colours clash in almost every way, the icons are comedically incongruous. (an iconset should be like a font) all the smooshy angles are akin to my 4-year old flexing in css. users uploaded square (and some circle) images for their course and now those are being funhoused unimaginaetivley. Honestly making all the course icons, user, icons, social media links, underlines on the navbar, numbers in the leaderboard, the memrise logo (which is kinda nice and new) and review icons is nauseating and makes me sweat. I hid everything on the page that I could while still using it… I’m following this thread until it changes. I still regret buying 2year plan 1year ago. I’ve lost the rest of my respect after logging in one day and seeing this. They should give us a (back in time) button by default… and in this case see how almost everyone clicks it

I thought Memrise decided to hear the users more I guess not.

Ikr right. It looks like it’s for elementary students… I swear, most on the platform are gonna be much older than that. Petition for a dark theme please. (Note I’m not a memrise staff I’m just triggered as heck)
Changes: BG, random white blue, added drop shadow
Still maintains the yellow that they so desperately wants.

I’ve been on the site for quite a long time, and most of the changes over the years haven’t bothered me too much.

I just want Memrise right now to change the colours, as I’m sure everything else we will all adapt to easily enough.

What upsets me the most right now is that I just got my friend into Memrise.
These colours hurt my eyes (and many others’) as well, of course, but they trigger her photophobia (as in, she is feeling literal pain in her eyes).

Your design is honestly a nice compromise and a bit easier to look at, @trying-to-survive.

You can use the official courses on decks too, though. At least, I can…

Works fine for me.

They irony is they said the redesign was to make Memrise like more adult-like.

Where did you read that? Do you have a link?

I have just learned “Italian 6” on the MemRise web site then gone to the Decks website.

It does NOT list the course and I can not find any official courses there any more.

PS

Apparently they were never on Decks but Community courses are on MemRise probably to the end of April 2019.

Yeah they’re not listed but they still work if you just change the URL then bookmark them.

Cunning ploy @dylan.nicholson.548 - thanks !
I went to the course on the MemRise web then removed www and replaced it by “decks”

https://decks.memrise.com/course/1121296/italian-6/

It was in the patch notes on google play I think, but also for sure on the android popup. I actually wanted to take a screenshot but it was in Dutch so I figured it would be useless.

Maar nee, Nederlands is niet nutteloos, toch?

I also note that the emotions they ascribe to the shade closest to Memrise’s yellow are “depressing, cynical, melancholy.” Sort of says it all.

I hate the new design and I’ve replied to several threads about it in my agitation. Maybe not my finest hour, but I’m that piqued.

But. I also recognize how easy it is to get swept along by the tide of outrage, and that the people most likely to comment are those that feel strong negative emotion. I hated the “crowns” in Duolingo when they were first introduced, but was able to get reconciled to them in time, partially because I read some positive feedback about them in the Duo forums that helped me see the change differently.

So, I am asking in true sincerity - is there anyone out there, any Memrise users, who actually do like and prefer the new design? Anyone who prefers it or thinks it’s a good idea? I would really like to hear the positives, if there are any.
