[N/A] Daily Reminder removed from Apps (iOS/Android)

Description: The daily reminder, used to set notifications, has been removed from the Apps (iOS and Android). You will still receive notifications (if enabled) and reminders (for the time being) but instead of choosing a time at which they will arrive, they will be sent automatically based on various factors or criteria.

Thanks!
Do I understand correctly that in the old system time with the only factor in sending a notification? It would help to clarify if there were by any chance an overview telling which factors and criteria and what the difference between a reminder and notification is (if the former is not just a special notification reminding that it is time to study).

Can I ask why this change was made? I relied on the daily reminder notification to keep my streak going. I haven’t seen any notifications of any kind from the app since this was changed.

Indeed! Some more information / actions on this will be greatly appreciated.
I did rely on the Daily Notification to keep doing my daily study (notification which I will not dismiss till the daily study done).

We do not understand how this is set as a “Limitation”, when it was working perfectly before.
Now there are no notifications/reminders at all whatsoever, so do not understand that “they will be sent automatically based on various factors or criteria.” So far, no notifications arrive at all!!! I’ve been like this for 3 weeks now.

Thanks for providing more information, or better, fix/revert notification changes to previous status.

P.S.: Note that I started (~3 weeks ago) having the lack of notifications even when the parameter in settings to activate notifications and time was still there in the (Android) app. Now (since ~2 weeks ago) the settings parameter to activate them or set the time is completely gone as well.

We decided to implement a new notifications system, which we believe will be better in the long run.

Correct  We don’t have an overview of the new criteria at this time, but I will try and provide some more information on this over the coming weeks.

We are still implementing the new system, so you may experience a lack of notifications during this period.

Hi,

we greatly appreciate your personal feedback on the forums, transparency and exchange.

I do not really use the mobile app to review (I have many user scripts activated, 100% rely on “all typing”, no multiple choice, no hints, etc.); I rarely used it on Bluestacks/KOPlayer emulator to learn several new words (“half-planting” concept across several levels) so I clearly will not be the guy who jumps out of the window just because you are changing a tapping app which you can not force into fully typing mode (without hints, no multiple-choice) for SR reviews.

I was using an older stable Android app version anyways…

But as an IT guy and Java EE / Middleware backend software developer myself I wonder why it is required to shut down the old working notification system or change the app BEFORE the new system is completely implemented and fundamentally tested.

Have you had any overload on your servers?
Any technical problems which occured which forced you to do this step?

You know…if you are going to test the new system, another ~2-6 weeks testing phase will delay the rollout, if you have your QS ddepartment take a look which requires time for functional tests incl. testing on several Android OS versions (4.4 → 8) + IOS.

If there should be any bugs hidden with unforseen side effects or required specific OS version fixes to find all out-ouf-boundary conditions (I can remember another thread where a fix had to be backported to an older OS version) water might flow another ~2-4 weeks down the river.

I am sure you do not want to rollout a new app and server code too soon which might break reviews in the end.

Do the server code changes effect the Memrise web portal at all? Hopefully not.

Yes, as a Memrise user myself who learns Portuguese on your platform I am a bit afraid yet of the pending rollout as I know how past code updates and rollouts happend on the web portal and how they broke reviews, functionality and (before working) Tampermonkey user script.

Maybe it would be a good thing to implement a fallback switch in the app and on the server to be able to turn off the new code / module if something really bad happens in the worstcase?..just saying.

This is a confirmation of my thoughts that maybe some app users would have liked to see your current notification/reminder functionality to stay activated for the next couple of weeks.

You do have production vs development and testing systems, don’t you?

Is it really not possible to have it all working in parallel incl. new development + testing before the final rollout and the final go of your QS department for your new reminder system?

Some of you mentioned you never received Daily Reminders or Reminders since the implementation of this new system.

  • Can you confirm if this is still the case?

  • Do you now receive notifications?

Any information provided will assist us in improving the service

Update: It seems like Daily Reminders have been paused (due to a few bugs) and should go live again by Monday/Tuesday (25th Sept). If you can let me know after those dates if you still experience issues.

I will update you with further information on how these reminders work as and when I receive it.

@memrisematty I received my first notification since the previous system stopped today. Not sure if it’s going to continue. I will note that it popped up at 11am on a Friday - I typically use the app in the evenings, and previously had my notifications set for 7pm. I’m usually at work and not able to use the app with sound during the say. An 11am reminder that I have to keep visible until I get home and have time to do the day’s lessons isn’t especially helpful, although I admit it might just be caused by the app not having enough information to schedule the notifications usefully.

Indeed, notifications worked again (no setting of time though) for few days since around 1 week ago. On Thursday it stopped working again (the pause you mention, I guess). I notice there was actually an update on Wednesday night, hence the no more notifications linked to such update.
BTW, such update also broke my streak!! :S :frowning:

Daily Reminders / Push Notifications should now be working correctly, and are being sent at a pre-determined time (for now). The option to change the time of the reminder has been removed. We will update you if we re-introduce this feature in the near future.

Hi Matty,

For me this does not seem to be working correctly.

As mentioned I cannot change the time of the reminder I am receiving. Also I cannot choose to turn it on or off, which I find slightly odd. Is that something that you have also removed?

Most irritatingly though, is sometimes I will randomly get a reminder at others not at all.
When the reminder feature was still available, I set it to 11am. It stopped completely for quite some time, but now randomly maybe 2 or 3 days a week I will get a reminder, while the other days not at all.
More frustratingly, sometimes the reminder is at 11am, and others 11pm.

Also I see under the Memrise Science page, specifically advertising about reminders, yet the feature does not exist?

edit: I am using version 2.948067_memrise

hello, I made an android reinstall of memrise, after my phone died. unfortunately the notifications on this new phone didn’t came for 2 days - and today I’ve got one at 11am, when I’m at work.
could you please advise me how to set it up to another time like 7pm when I’m free to do my language course after work? I believe that there must be a solution since the October. thank you

you!

please update us on this issue, thank you very much.
