I just had a thought about a feature that would be really excellent if it did exist but still doesn’t. The main reason why I create my own courses instead of learning from other people’s is the customisation. Don’t you think it would be really cool if you could set your own learning tests? E.g If somebody has done a course where they test you on your native language and promt you with your target language, wouldn’t it be cool to be able to change that around? That sort of thing. Theirs so many community created courses which I feel are wasted on me just because their testing criteria doesn’t fit what I like.
With the only way to fix this error, a complicated method of importing to anki, exporting from anki, and mass uploading in bulk yourself I feel like a step could be removed here. Or simply by people ticking a box giving people the right to copy the course and then change the parameters themselves.
It’s just a thought I can’t believe I never had before, and I just wanted to highlight(/probably re-highlight because I’m sure somebody else has thought of this already)
the one-way testing is a severe weakness of Memrise (ie it trains you to translate from your native tongue to the one you’re learning, when you really should immerse yourself in the new language, and learn to read/understand it)
Having said that, I see that most of the courses I learn, including my own, would not lend themselves for 2-way querying, as I add a lot of corollary like connotations, multiple translations for sayings etc
I see that, it wouldn’t work so well if the prompt with different meanings wouldn’t be tested on.
Which kind of courses do you study? I feel like because Chinese has pinyin and hanzi theirs a lot more variety in the prompts that you find. But thinking about it now only really languages with a different writing system would benefit. That and people who are fluent in the targrt language ahe of the memrise course and want to change it. Interesting.
thinking about it - this is tricky because translation (which is was Memrise essentially teaches for languages) is rarely 1 → 1 - it’s mostly 1 → Many, and each of the many solutions has many in the original language.
So, for a course to be reversible, you’d have to specifically create it for that purpose. Limiting to tapping tests would circumvent some of the issues I guess, but you’d lose a lot in doing so, too.
I completely agree for courses like yours it’s not nearly as useful. The English for my Chinese courses look like that as well. This is not the best example because it’s mostly nouns which can often have a direct translation but here’s what the Chinese courses look like.
Theirs much more testing criteria. Say for example my course requires you to have installed Chinese keyboard. But if someone hasn’t done that they may want to switch it to pinyin. Or for someone like me when a lot of courses online use pinyin instead of Chinese keyboard I might want to switch it myself to use Chinese keyboard. The two writing systems do have direct 1-1 translation which is why it’s obviously a feature more useful for people studying languages with different alphabets. In fact probably only for different alphabets, as in any course theirs pretty much guaranteed to be at least one English section (or native section) where there are many things entered.
Interesting seeing your course, yeah you practically have no options to change, it’s just one way or the other, which of course makes sense for Czech.
I also forgot to mention that some people may want to switch to audio only, pretty sure that will be strange, but of course doable. I’ve seen some test on audio courses online already.
