Mems Disappearing

benton.1 I noticed a few days ago that when I select a Mem in the Duolingo German to help me remember a word, it doesn’t stay around, it disappears. It’s there when I select it, like it should be, but when I get the words the next time and make a mistake, the Mems I had chosen are gone. I’ve reselected the Mems three or four times and they’ve disappeared each time I’ve selected them. What’s up with that?

That is very worrying. Memrise is dicking around with mems again :frowning:

@BeaTrisy Who are the moderators of this forum or who is in charge of Bug Control? I put in this notice about the Mems disappearing 21 days ago and no one from Memrise has made any comment about this problem.

Edit: I just found your name BeaTrisy as a “Bug Buster”, so I edited my post and put you on the address line so you will get direct notification. Are you the person designated to answer peoples’ questions and fix “bugs” on Memrise?

I’ve been bringing this up a couple of times each week. No response. It’s done. Whoever decided to get rid of mems in the first place had a temper tantrum when we complained and successfully got them reinstated. Now he/she got the final laugh.

Disgusting.

I have not noticed a lack of mems on the Swedish courses I curate; all the old ones seem to be there.

i noticed how mems disappeared from most courses long time ago… and how every time when i want to see my chosen or created mems i have to “re-associate” them again, and again, and again (if they did not disappear completely meanwhile)

Yeah, they’re all still there to choose. It’s just once you’ve chosen them, they will get un-chosen after you finish your session. So next time you’re reviewing and click “see answer” to reinforce with the mem, it won’t be there.

I am really disappointed. I haven’t studied japanese for long, and now that I am reviewing all these stuff, I cannot visualize my mems even if I get a wrong answer. I put a lot of effort in making them, and it seems like I have to restart from zero…I wish that this bug would be fixed soon.

Thank you very much!

Joshua hasn’t responded to any messages on the forum since June 29, and his profile now says that he is no longer responding to forum messages.

MemriseMatty hasn’t responded to any messages on the forum since September 28.

BeaTrisy hasn’t responded to any mesages since October 12.

Lien is the only staff member seen here this week, and she last responded to a post yesterday.

It seems that they have decided to cut user support and interaction to the most minimal level possible.

@Lien Hi, Lien. Since you seem to be the only person working “bugs” to be responding to anyone, I’ll ask you what’s going on. What’s wrong with with the Mems? Is Memrise doing away with them, slowly? I find them very useful in learning words that are difficult for me to learn, as do others. Also, why are the people who are supposed to be working on “bugs” not answering our questions reference the Mems?

so, this issue is now official 1 month old, and no answer from the team

@BeaTrisy, since you’re on right now and responding to questions, can you finally confirm if you and the team did this intentionally?

We’ve known for at least a year that Memrise decided to abandon the original community/crowdsourced memrise service to focus on a mobile app that has a few curated language courses designed by their staff. Community/crowdsourced features like mems are things they barely tolerate, but sometimes allow to continue to exist as long as it doesn’t distract them from their new product (which is still called “memrise” but has little in common with the original memrise).

What I’m interested to know is whether, in the past year or so, any new spaced-repeat services have popped up that do have something like mems, created by users? Or if anyone from here is working on setting up such a service?

I made a Mem tonight and, after I made it, I scrolled down a bit and saw a little box that could be checked that said “Always show MEMS”. After I checked it, the MEMS showed up every time I made a mistake, just like before. I don’t know how long the little box has been there because I had to scroll down to see it. I didn’t see a notification that the MEMS had been brought back, so I’m posting this to let everyone who is interested know. Fingers crossed (thumbs pressed) this will be permanent. My thanks to whom ever brought it back.

That little box has been there ever since I have been using memrise (since May 2015), but, like you say, it is quite far down on the screen and you have to scroll quite a ways to see it. I am very glad you have, though!

Would you say that the problem is now solved for you then?

Have you used that button “always show mems” or is the problem you are having a different one?

I have not noticed any problem with mems not showing, either on the web version or the app.

“mems disassociated/disappearing” does not refer to not being able to see any mems, but to having to select again and again the mems you already created / chosen for a specific item. I never navigated with “always see mems”, however until the Moralin discussion and the “update” referring to eliminating most mems, I never had a problem seeing all mems if I so wanted. You seem unaware of the fact that 90% of all mems disappeared one year ago (one could see only 7 and then only 5 and them the team came again with the issue of “offendig” mems - many items in the “oldest”/ first made Chinese and Japonese courses had 20 and more. Also, the automatic search for picture via bing was taken down more 3 years ago)

well, who needs mems, memrise asks you something and gives you the answer at the same time. Helluva learning

I don’t have this problem with the Swedish courses I do, I really don’t. I know that the number of mems is restricted on the app, but I haven’t noticed any problems like this on “my” Swedish courses.

I have been using memrise since May 2015, so I do remember the picture search being available. To be honest, I don’t miss it that much because it contributed - on “my” courses at least - to there being an over-abundance of mems using the same picture. I think it narrowed people’s perspective and imaginations to have these pictures offered.

I just started using Memrise about a year ago, I made, and used, lots of Mems for my Hebrew class since the language was so different for me and I needed more associations than with Spanish. I first noticed the problem with MEMS, like you said Hydro, when I made a mistake and the Mem that I chosen, or created, would not appear and I would have to select one again. Last night, I made a Mem for the German class I’m taking and noticed the little box and checked it and was pleased that the Mem I created did not disappear when I made a mistake again. So, my hope is/was that the “disappearing Mems” problem was “fixed”. Oh, Hydro, dichan daiyin wah ta khun rien passa thai. Dichan poot passa thai dai nit nit noi noi. Tehwa, chan kien maidai. Choke di kap botrien khun! You get star if you can make out any of the words.

:disappointed_relieved: I rejoiced too soon. The “Always show mems” doesn’t mean mems always show when we make a mistake, it literally means you see them all the time.
