Did the same in my Sami course
Yeah, that could work, and I’ve considered it, but I really don’t have enough time to do that. I don’t even really have enough time to use the courses made by others as much as I would like to, at least not at the moment. Maybe down the road sometime.
I thought I would give some time for memrise to make auto-accept optional or remove it, but it seems increasingly unlikely that the development team cares about ruining the learning experience for those who don’t want auto accept (and for Japanese learners whose IME is incompatible with auto-accept). I am poised to switch to anki, and have suspended learning new words on memrise unless they sort this out; I can’t afford to sink any more time into what appears to be a sinking ship. I already have thousands of reviews to maintain on memrise, but at this point I just want to minimize my commitment to this service
I’m just really sad. This used to be a service I really liked. I would recommend memrise to everyone I knew and was recently considering buying a membership to support the website’s development. But now, that seems like a distant prospect. There are so many complaints on this thread. I just wish I could get an honest explanation why development doesn’t seem to care.
Forgive me if this observation is stated above but I have just done some of @alanh’s World Geography course and none of my typed answers were accepted (I had to hit enter to get it right).
@BeaTrisy - Has there been a change or have I just chosen an alternative answer every time?
PS I’ve just done another session of ‘watering’ and many of the answers were obviously the original, so, too many to be coincidental (an alternative).
@BeaTrisy can we have an update please?
Yes, others have mentioned this previously (eg posts 25,105,108, 113) . Auto-accept doesn’t work on alts (in all but a few cases). There are other inconsistencies, too.
Annoying, isn’t it?
Thanks for your reply @alanh,
Auto-accept doesn’t work on alts
I had assumed that, but the chances of always giving the alternative for two watering sessions (and when I was pretty sure I had given the official answer) must be, slim - hence my questioning @BeaTrisy if it’s reverted (as many of you have requested) to no auto-accept.
PS
I have just done a further watering test and paused and actually checked that it was the official answer BUT no auto-accept.
What’s more, if I waited for the clock to get to the end, it then accepted the official answer.
Yup, I had this problem yesterday, too. So bloody annoying. I guess there are no “alternatives” available on the official memrise courses?
And it is only us course creators and course contributors who offer them and that is why this option was overlooked???
Yup!
Not sure about that. I know, for example, that some alts have been added to the ‘official’ Spanish (Spain) courses following requests made in the course forum.
@DW7, I have done some testing on the first 5 entries in Level 17 and can confirm that alts are not ‘auto-accepted’ when given in response to a review. As you say, though, if an alt is typed, the answer will be accepted (ie as green) if either the clock is allowed to run down or the “Enter” key is pressed.
However, if a wrong answer is typed in response to a review, there are some circumstances where an alt will be auto-accepted. For example, the entry “Loire River” has 3 alts, one of which is “Loire”. Therefore, a typo made and left uncorrected when the clock runs down results in a ‘yellow’ error and the item will come up again during the review session. If you then start to type “Loire River”, it will auto-accept on typing the “e” of “Loire”. Similar behaviours will happen with some other entries.
As @amanda-norrsken puts it, it’s “so bloody annoying”. If only there was an option to switch off auto-accept!
Or play musical anagrams. Guess the title of the song that is playing?
The damn virtual keyboard is back for all of my courses. Those Capital letters are especially hard to not see. And I never use the virtual keyboard anyway because I can make the special letters I need for some courses with my actual keyboard.
Hi @alanh, sorry if I haven’t been clear, but I am not talking about alternative answers.
I was reporting that you appear to have your wish granted , namely if you type the correct answer, it is no longer auto-accepted and one must hit the enter or wait for the clock to expire.
Have you found that?
Still having auto-accepts on my end, too. Could it be a capitalization issue that’s making it not auto-accept for you?
I noticed, for example, in the “Country Mapping” course, if I’m being tested on “United Kingdom”, and I type “united kingdom” it won’t auto-accept, but still accepts it after I hit enter. If I go back and capitalize it, it auto-accepts.
How strange - up until recently I noticed “auto-accept” but now on the first three levels - when watering - I know I have given the official answer which has not been accepted.
Oh ! - I just thought - I wonder if it’s applying strict typing ie somalia is not auto-accepted now but Somalia is?!!
Yes @TinyCaterpillar - we both thought the same thing (only just seen your post!).
Could it be a capitalization issue that’s making it not auto-accept for you?
PS
BUT I think this is a change - because “somalia” worked before.
Yes @TinyCaterpillar. The introduction of auto-accept also imposed ‘strict typing’ on us (see the first few posts in this thread). In one of the ‘official’ Spanish courses I’m taking, a review earlier today required me to type the full answer “el primer ministro; la primera ministro” when, previously, it was only necessary to give one or the other.
How odd - does this breaks their “colon rule”.
Yes. See also my post above at No 88 for other examples of changed behaviours.
I am almost at this stage. I hope it doesn’t come to this, but we’ll see if, oh, I don’t know, one staff member deigns to respond.
Sadly, but, although I used to be an ardent Memrise fan, now I feel I’m likely to cancel my pro membership. With those irritating auto-accept and virtual keyboard, conjuncted with absolutely non-existing customer support and complete ignoring our opinion, I’m forced to peruse other opportunities to study languages. Really sad.
Auto-accept is logically and objectively HORRIBLE for learning… you are simply TELLING people whether their answer is correct or wrong, before choosing to submit it… this is like a teacher standing next to you during a test, telling you to correct each wrong answer until everything is perfect. Yeah sure, you need to be able to get to the right answer in the first place, but that is not what we are trying to learn here. We want to learn to get the right answer by ourselves, WITHOUT help.
I’m sorry I have to think and say this… but how can people monitoring such a site be so stupid? Honestly… I’m not even being mad or angry, I’m serious. This is simply unintelligent. Dumb. I cannot use nicer words for this. Please… start thinking. Memrise was once a great idea. Make it so again, please.
