Memrise Release Notes - 27 Apr 2017

i’m quite sure that they will also delete the leadrrboards

than what’s the difference with a dumb stack of cards?

I agree, if I wanted to spend that much time personalizing my study (Which I will agree is more beneficial, but is it worth the time investment?) why wouldn’t I just build my own Anki deck?

Give me one good reason to use Memrise over Anki…

The only real differences between Memrise and Anki at the moment are; if Anki decides to push out a terrible update to their program; I am not forced to install it, Anki is completely free, and Anki doesn’t give you hints at the answer through multiple choice.

Seriously…can anyone think of a good reason for me not to go and install Anki right now?

I took a break from Memrise to go learn from another program for awhile, but after seeing this change, after my program runs out of lessons, I am guessing I won’t be coming back. Even if they do add the mems back; I am still going to have to weigh the risks vs rewards, as many have pointed out they might decide to gut another part of the website, which would be devastating if I had any REAL time invested. Consumer confidence in a product is a terrible thing to lose when your product forces down updates.

40 votes (so far) to bring back mems, ZERO to keep this update. LISTEN TO YOUR USERS MEMRISE!

it’s much worse

three years ago they gave points for making mems
the reason they gave was, that making a mem helps remembering
than they stopped giving points for it
why?
because it turned out it did not help remembering, or because they had enough mems to lure people to memrise with pretty pictures?
but now we can’t see each others mems anymore
why?
because they were ‘offensive’?
i haven’t seen a single offensive mem
my feeling is that in a few years time memrise will be entirely to be paid for, so that you get the material that was made for free by it’s users
mark my words: the next step is deleting the leaderboards
and everytime they change something, what they’re telling us is that their theories about memory and learning are not correct

Link to the poll

And like others have said, voting and leaving comments in the app stores should help warn potential new users.

Dear MemRise team (including @BeaTrisy @Joshua @MemriseMatty and @Lien), I have never seen so much upset at a change/ loss of a feature and there have been many ‘regrets’.

(Except perhaps this early thread. I know we were all upset at the loss of Course Forums, but a lot of that thread was about how to make it work for our courses for the benefit of the community. See : [Site Feedback] Changes to Course Forums - email from Olivia Zavala

Is there any chance of a re-think or at least a compromise? Failing that, a comment or acknowledgement of our many posts would be appreciated.

(Dear Team - some of my other comments are here Memrise Release Notes - 27 Apr 2017)

Unless they roll-back the recent change, it looks like this section of the Knowledge Base will need to be severely modified: http://feedback.memrise.com/knowledgebase/topics/77642-mems

From the large feedback we have received, we have decided to close this thread. You will only see your own comments. Sorry, only one. The first one. No other comments will be seen except those created by Memrise. I’m sure you all will agree that this will be in the best interests of every user…

if they want to save on costs, they’ld better do something about useless badges like ‘first emoji’

I just found this in the “knowledge base”:

^^This was what I really loved about mems. Can it really be true that the powers that be at memrise no longer believe that this is true?

What about all the people who really rely on mems for learning languages with characters, like Japanese and Chinese?

They seem to be especially lost without other people’s mems. I wonder what Ben Whately thinks, he created a Chinese course, I believe.

What? Why? I realy hate you for this. It’s not for just taking someones mems and not use your own. We learn leanguages together. Someone find a good pattern, another one find good picture for it, next one upgrade it to the next level. When you see a lot of other mems you maping your own maind (create something like road map for remembering) - its help you and help others because we are all humansbeengs we have nearly equal thoughts process, when shearing we creating a giant neural net. And by this I can learn language using another foreign language. Now its all gone.
Return this back:

You won’t see mems that you “liked” anymore.
You won’t see mems created by fellow learners.
You won’t see mems created by course authors.

Whithout it my lerning speed doped down by 3-4 times.
I don’t see the reason to use memrise anymore. There are a lot of other stand alone applications that can give me same vocabulary cards builder-remainder with pictures and comments. I will try to stay there as long as posible because I paid for it for a whole year and because I already have a lot of words mems there, but you force me to leave your project. It’s a pity.

Just did that. Rewrote my original review and changed my five-star rating to a one-star rating.

I rewrote it too. But there are several hundred people upset about the ongoing process versus several million downloading the app, most of the latter having no idea of this thread or this forum at all.

I guess you’ll have to change this to “Be the ONLY one to create one”.

Learning Japanese through Memrise was such a treat because the mems offered me not just a way to remember the characters, but also some very important cultural or historical context for them, especially for characters that had no direct translation to English. Now that there are no more mems except for my own, my learning process is severely slowed down to the extent that I wonder if it’s even worth using Memrise anymore. Such a shame.

they we’re also usefull for pointing out the radicals in kanji, it’s very difficult and time consuming to find that out for yourself

i was one of those people who took time to make mems for japanese, mandarin korean russian and some for finnish and latin… i always had good memes full of info and explanations for me first of all and also for the people who do not have time to do all that research… i did them in english so that everyone could understand… now i can assure memrise that in over 800 mems none is offensive except if you are a &^#@@# twat and you want to make anything offensive…

i wonder whether those ‘offensive’ mems were actually signalled by religious extremists - we have lots of problems with religious extremism these days

Like many others, I had made the (incorrect) assumption that the absence of mems was some sort of temporary glitch/error. Now that I see this is not the case, I’m truly surprised by the rationale behind this decision. This severely limits much of what made Memrise such an effective study aid for Japanese (and undoubtedly, many other languages) – I’m really hoping this change is reverted, or that those who have been disappointed by this change can find a replacement site for Memrise.

Why not have a toggle for community mems (somewhere in the settings menu)? It could be turned off by default. This way, people who really do not want to see explicit/offensive content are safe from harm. But for those that do appreciate community mems have the choice to enable them. You could even put a warning that says “toggle at your own descretion”

I just want to say that me too, I feel also very angry with this measure. I really hope to have mems back again soon.
