Memrise Release Notes - 25 Sep 2017 (Changes to typing tests)

Well, @BeaTrisy, any hint as to why you’ve reverted this change “after the feedback” but haven’t rescinded Ziggy “after the feedback”? Also, any attempt to elucidate @Wuxian’s worry about algorithm changes would be nice. Thanks.

I really appreciate the swift response to user feedback about the issues with this update. I rely on memrise for building knowledge base for languages and other domains, and the initial implementation of those features severely raised the frustration level. Thank you for reverting and taking the time to reconsider how to implement those features in a way that doesn’t make it worse for many users.

The auto accept was pretty cool… can you at least make it a option to use?

There’s already a script for this.

+1 for auto accept

It is? Where, I can’t find the setting?

(other than that, I agree with what others have said: these new “features” are part of the reason I never use the app)

In the Settings. Open your profile, tap on the wheel in the top right corner, scroll down to Learning Settings, turn off Auto Detect.

the first idea is not too bad, but this is bull

Keyboard is automatically generated to include all the necessary characters plus a handful of distractors. This also solves the problem of needing to maintain the keyboards for each course. Some courses have incomplete, disorganized keyboards which make answering very difficult.

Thank You for being observant and responsive  :slightly_smiling_face:

Thank you for reverting to the old settings. In my opinion a solution would be to make the changes optional.

For the time the new features were out, I tried them out extensively, and this is what I thought. I’m a learner for Korean.

I really liked the auto-accept because I knew if I made a typo. I always had been frustrated from typing a word, submitting it, and discovering I had a typo. It was also useful for synonyms, because if I had the wrong synonym I could type in the correct one. If I type an answer that I think is right, I can just press enter and submit the wrong information so that it shows up in my next review session.

The keyboard was very distracting at first, and I didn’t like it for the same reasons as others. Especially for Korean, it gives a major hint to the word, as words are typically 1 to 3 characters long. But over time, I got used to ignoring it. I could enter my word faster than looking at the keyboard. It came in handy for words with 3 or more synonyms, because I knew exactly which synonym to type, instead of guessing the wrong synonym all the time. Other than an option for turning on the keyboard on and off in the settings, I think a fair workaround could be to have the keyboard (or parts of the keyboard) appear as the timer runs down to give the learner a push in the right direction.

I’m looking forward to the new features regarding the different difficulties of typing tests.

well, I think the only fair (?) indeed solution is to let the learner chose her settings: gamers vs learners … (i disliked both features, and I am learning a number of languages, European and Asian)

This is still an issue. I experienced it today when I went to check a mem. @BeaTrisy?

I like this change. Hints are very useful, when you have 20 similar answers and cannot decide which one to type. I’ve been using an app instead of webpage for this reason.

Just make them optional and everyone will be happy.

Thank you very much for reverting it and listening to the users.

It would be really great if we could get an option to disable auto accept and the automatically generated keyboard.
Because both these options actually give many (unwanted) hints and make learning less effective for some of us.

Well, when memrise was first created their vision was brought to fruit using the website. Now, when I say website I actually mean the learning part and not the website in its entirety. Every man and his dog has a website whether necessary or not and, in our modern world, all websites need an app and that is where the problem lies. We have a simple clash of input methods and because of the sheer number of app users, the website has become redundant. Memrise has abandoned all of their old courses and created new app optimised courses [Language 1-7]. This is sad because this is evidence that the website IS discontinued and is no longer being supported. I’m just waiting for the day when It is gone completely except for the forum and for course building or has been cloned to mimic the app. Its a shame because the website has its own merits, IMO, more so than the app but again there are just too many app users to warrant the website. Take a closer look at the changes that have been made from commas to ziggy, from new courses to mem problems. Tell me when was the last time anything positive happened to the website? Everything new is all app orientated.

i can’t imagine the real website really disappearing completely
the website is much easier to use then the app because of the keyboard
