Memrise demands correct word order with synonyms

I have a problem with my Setswana courses.

Due to dialects in Setswana, it is important to know all the variations of a word.

So for example, the meaning of ‘all together’ is given as ‘rotlhe / lotlhe’

For the type in segments, memrise accurately marks as correct either one, but only if given alone.

However, there is a type of memrise question where you have to click on the correct words (including the slash). The problem here is that memrise demands the exact word order as given. In other words, you can’t answer ’ lotlhe / rotlhe’ as this will be marked incorrect. It has to be given as ‘rotlhe / lotlhe’ instead.

Not only that, but memrise does something similar for when you try to type in multiple options separated by a slash - you have to type in all the words in the exact correct order they were originally given in the wordlist!

Since there is no particular reason for any word to be more correct than another, and therefore no particular reason why words have to be in a particular order, is there any way to fix this? Or have I set up my courses incorrectly?

I don’t think I really understand your problem, however I try an answer

use “;” and the alts for giving synonyms/alternatives/variants, instead of slash.

and use various other means to distinguish between synonyms. You can find various idea about how to do this in these fora…

It sounds like Memrise treats slashes like it treats commas. In this case, it thinks there are three correct answers: the word before the slash, the word after the slash, and both words together exactly as they occur in the database. In a typing test, any of the three will be treated as correct.

Since you are the course creator, you can add alternate answers.

Go to the course edit screen, find rotlhe / lotlhe, hover your mouse over it, and then click the little “Alts” button that appears. It should be in the Setswana column, not the English column. Type _lotlhe / rotlhe in the text box that pops up, click the green plus, and then click save.

You can add the various answer orders as options in the database. Just mouse over the blank area to the right of the word you want to add options to and you will see a little blue pencil on a tab that says “alts”. Click that and type the extra optional order into the box, press +, then save. If you don’t press the + before the save button it will do nothing. That took me a while to figure out. Click the alts tab again to make sure you did it right. The optional order you just entered should show.

Thanks so much for your reply, this should solve the problem!
