Marking only some words as tapping only?

I’m doing a memrise course where some words are better to be tapping only (we don’t really need to know how to spell Penicillium chrysogenum) but some would be better for retention to learn that isn’t tapping (i.e. isoprenoids).

Is there a way to do both tapping only for some words and typing tests?

I don’t think that is possible.

I agree

Unfortunately not, but you can ask the memrise team if they could add that feature but I dont think they would

Hi, @MeredithNa.

If by ‘tapping’ you mean the tests where you insert the ‘word blocks’ in the right order, I don’t think there is any way to set an item to use only that testing method, short of maybe with userscripts.

However, I think you can achieve what you’re looking for with multiple choice only testing, which can be done. In the course’s database, click the header of the column that would be tested on, go to the “Testing” tab, and uncheck “Typing Tests Enabled”. This should make all items in that database multiple choice only when being tested on that column.

If you’re trying to make some items multiple choice only and others have typing tests, you’ll need to split them up into different databases, so that you can have the option unchecked for one and checked for the other. This also means that they’ll need to be in different levels, since you can only use one database in any given level.

I hope that helps. Feel free to ask if you still have questions.

Hey @TinyCaterpillar,

Thanks a bunch, man!
Just what I was looking for - I’m doing one on computer science (based on a book, I’m not that smart), where an answer can be something like “The theoretical and mathematical foundations of programming”. And the spelling and sequence is entirely arbitrary and not important for the knowledge being imparted. Tested it and it drove me crazy.
I also had one that something along the lines of “What are the four primary branches of information technology” - word bank was bad enough (There’s no reason why they would be ordered in any way), but writing out the four long names on the app was nothing short of a chore.

It’s not immediately clear that the header is clickable, is it? Makes sense but I searched high and low, but I never thought to click that (has no hover effect, the rows gain little icons). Do you know whether that is a known issue at Memrise? Because it seems an easy one to make more comfortable for the user.

Anyway, really appreciated your help, I’m quite chuffed now.
Thanks again and stay safe. :slightly_smiling_face:
