After today’s release the iOS app is still broken, same issues:
a) If you start a review with let’s say 3 words, you are prompted for more than 3 words in the test.
b) Crashes with courses that have audio wav files included. Not that often as the version before but still crashes.

Roll back to the N-2 version that was solid.

Hi @KungaWangchuk3
As mentioned previously, in order to fix the crash, you’ll need to reinstall the app. This tends to refresh the system and solve the error.

We are currently looking into the error in the review session and the Keyboard toggle not displaying, and I’ll update this thread as soon as a fix is out.

My memrise app is crashing across all my ios machines. 2 iphones and a ipad. The crash only happens when I do the classic review.

HI BeaTrisy, thanks for the info. I too was wondering about the ‘use keyboard button’. At the same time that button disappeared, the ‘your answer’ box at the bottom of the correct answer page also disappeared. I miss this feature as much as using the device’s own keyboard. Can you let me/us know if this is also going to return please?

The update did not fix the issue for me. I still cannot use my phone’s keyboard :confounded: I can’t use the app until this is fixed so I guess I’ll be cancelling my subscription until it is.

Of course, I’ve uninstalled and reinstalled the app, no luck.

The update today neither fixed the issue with prompting for more than the number of repeated words (defaults to 10 all the time) and still crashes with wav files.

The above version is even more of a dog’s dinner than the previous release. :anguished:

Two major bugs in this release that weren’t in the previous:

  1. The ability to switch to the iPhone’s normal keypad/keyboard from the memrise-specific letters has disappeared. This is a major issue because most people can type much faster on the iPhone’s normal keypad/keyboard than the randomly rendered memrise-specific letters. It means review sessions take much longer now. It’s also an issue because using the iPhone’s normal keypad/keyboard is effectively more difficult, because you don’t effectively get the clue of which letters could be in the word, as you do with the memrise-specific letters. People won’t necessarily want to be forced into using the easier mode of the memrise-specific letters.

  2. Review mode used to take into consideration the number of words that needed watering/reviewing, so that you’d only review that number of words. If there were no words to review, then it would use the “words per reviewing session” setting. For example, previously, if you had 6 words to review, and the “words per reviewing session” was set to 50, you only review those 6. However, now, if you had 6 words to review, and the “words per reviewing session” is set to 50, you’ll review 50. This is for many a waste of time. I imagine most people would only want to review/water words that needed reviewing/watering. So this is a bad regression bug.

I’m off to cancel my Pro membership renewal, which was otherwise going to happen some time in April.

I noticed this as well, but the crashing was a more serious issue for me, ha!

Yes the crashing and unnecessary review is still broken, worked in the N-2 release.

I think it’s not user friendly to tell people to uninstall and re-install apps. You need to write code that fixes any broken preferences and database entries rather than forcing end users to do such operations that is not the case with all other iOS applications.

After posting an incorrect answer the app no longer displays the answer I entered below the correct answer as it did before this update.

The crashing is mostly fixed for me, but the keyboard issue isn’t. :confounded:

As previously mentioned:

I must have missed it - thanks!

BeaTrisy,

Thanks for keeping us up to date. Can I suggest that if the fix is not imminent (i.e. within 24 hours), that you consider reverting to the working version BEFORE the latest set of updates and resulting bugs were implemented. Unless there was something really critical in the updates, right now I think you may be frustrating more users with the problems that were introduced than you are helping people with the well intended new updates. That way, you can work on fixing the problems without as much pressure, (almost) everyone will be happy and you can re-release the new updates including the fixes once you’ve tested and are ready.

I’ve been on a roll lately with my learning, but with the lack of a keyboard toggle I’ve been seriously slowed down. I’m a long time Pro user and would really like to be able to keep learning, sooner than later.

Cheers… Erik

Hi, I’m also waiting for the keyboard toggle to be re-introduced. Can you please at the same time re-introduce the ‘your answer’ feature at the bottom of the screen, if my answer was not correct? It really helped with learning what I was entering wrong, thank you!
iPhone 8, iOS 11.3, Memrise 2.3.20

The bug with Classic Review doing more reviews than the amount prompted is also very annoying, worked in the N-2 version.

Hi Mike,

this won’t fix any issues with your IOS app, but:

To me it seems to be one of the elementary issues you have on the IOS plattform that you can not rollback to a previous version (online)?!?

Can you even do manual backups of apps / phone so you can restore it, if the latest Apple IOS online store updates are not working anymore because of bugs?
Could happen to ANY app!

Maybe you guys need to be aware that you are beta testing new app releases once you press the store update button or auto-update is configured (default on Android)!

For Android you can search online archive sites and re-install the downloaded .APK file manually to easily rollback to an older working version.

The Memrise team would IMHO need a testing department and quality assurance (QS) team with a “testing concept” to guide functional testers (not the app developer!) through ALL basic app features (learn new words according to settings, review due words according to review settings, over-watering, keyboard, different writing script for different languages, etc.) incl. out-of-bounday conditions (e.g over-watering, wrong answers) for at least ~4-12 weeks (maybe 6 months?) before rolling out a new app version.

My impression from all the web portal updates in the last 6-18 months was, that those 4++ weeks of functional / elementary testing (QS) are not made available from the investors, but instead of recently committed new developer code seems to be rolled out immediately??!?

The Memrise dev team seems to have (very) strict deadlines when to rollout new releases, with what functions…and this IMHO creates all the trouble of non-tested, non-working, buggy software AND additionally on top removed features and only annoys users.

Example:
The web portal dashboard (full desktop browser mode on PC) is hardly useable since the last updates as the “classic review” button is randomized with Pro and was hidden behind a 2nd mobile app menu button screen (all explained in detail in the announcement threads).
The “max. global streak badget” as a motivator was removed but is still available in my older Android app version.

When I used the Android app (older version) on an Android emulator to learn (10 word setting) new words sometimes I would never have thought in using this mobile app for “classic reviews”:

  • too many letter hints on buttons (hadn’t seen option to switch to hardware keyboard like you described for IOS; I will re-check my version)
  • no free typing (if hardware keyboard switch is now removed on IOS with latest update: basically this could mean that they do not want you to have it!?)
  • multiple choice questions mixed with other exercise challenges (e.g audio listening) to water due items from the backlog queue

So I 100% focus on web portal reviews with a bunch of installed user scripts to force me into typing / recalling all of my due review backlog items.

I would rather NOT want to have “exercise challenges” like multiple choice, Speed review, Listening, etc. to water any due items and modify SR intervals.

Why do you all mobile users think that mobile app reviews for due items make sense to do when you can not “lock” the exercise challenge?

Won’t that create too many “false positives” for the next word SR intervals when you can not turn OFF button hints, multiple choice and mixed exercise type questions?

Just my 2cents

Hi BeaTrisy, is there an ETA for this fix? Not having a full keyboard option is actually much harder to complete review sessions.
