We’re back with a new mode and a redesigned test! For version one of Learn With Locals, we’ve tackled the Video Multiple Choice tests, with the Video Typing and Video Tapping tests to follow later (more on that at the end).
So, what’s different? First off, you’ll notice the change in the overall style of the session, which is similar to what you’ve seen in Preview and Speed Review. The progress bar and the points are at the top, with the keyboard shortcuts in the header. We’re going to be adding in the ‘edit course’ and ‘turn audio off’ buttons in here before we release this to everyone too, so don’t worry about that. We’ve also added audio back in on both LwL and Speed Reviews when you get a correct answer.
Next up the Video Multiple Choice test itself. So, we’ve used the screen space a little better and given you a much bigger video, and the choices on the side. Not only does this use the screen real estate a bit better, but it helps contextualise the answers a little better too, with them being literally side by side. We’ve also made sure it’s mobile-friendly, so it should work on tablets and phones too (although the app is still a better experience for these devices).
Finally, we added in the next button, which was oddly left out of the old design. In this design, the next button (labelled ‘I don’t know’ at first) takes the functionality of the ‘See Answer’ button that used to appear below the options. The button changes states depending on what you do, which we feel is a more elegant use of what we have on the page. Also, marking the answer as ‘I don’t know’ is more in line with what it actually does (clicking on ‘See Answer’ marks the question as wrong currently). Also, we’ll also be adding in the ignore and mark as difficult buttons in here in the future, which were also missing from the old tests, as we feel you should be able to control the item like this from any test screen, but I’m getting ahead of myself.
If there’s anything we’ve missed, please let us know!
What’s Next?
As I mentioned, Learn with Locals should also include Video Typing and Video Tapping tests, and these are coming next. Also, at the moment when you end a session, you are taken straight to the dashboard, which isn’t what we want. We’re building out a new End of Session screen to show your progress, leaderboards and what you learnt, as well as giving you an easy way to start your next session. This is coming up next!
Psst these are the designs, so the final developed feature may be sliiiightly different
