Launching Learn with Locals v1

We’re back with a new mode and a redesigned test! For version one of Learn With Locals, we’ve tackled the Video Multiple Choice tests, with the Video Typing and Video Tapping tests to follow later (more on that at the end).

So, what’s different? First off, you’ll notice the change in the overall style of the session, which is similar to what you’ve seen in Preview and Speed Review. The progress bar and the points are at the top, with the keyboard shortcuts in the header. We’re going to be adding in the ‘edit course’ and ‘turn audio off’ buttons in here before we release this to everyone too, so don’t worry about that. We’ve also added audio back in on both LwL and Speed Reviews when you get a correct answer.

Next up the Video Multiple Choice test itself. So, we’ve used the screen space a little better and given you a much bigger video, and the choices on the side. Not only does this use the screen real estate a bit better, but it helps contextualise the answers a little better too, with them being literally side by side. We’ve also made sure it’s mobile-friendly, so it should work on tablets and phones too (although the app is still a better experience for these devices).

Finally, we added in the next button, which was oddly left out of the old design. In this design, the next button (labelled ‘I don’t know’ at first) takes the functionality of the ‘See Answer’ button that used to appear below the options. The button changes states depending on what you do, which we feel is a more elegant use of what we have on the page. Also, marking the answer as ‘I don’t know’ is more in line with what it actually does (clicking on ‘See Answer’ marks the question as wrong currently). Also, we’ll also be adding in the ignore and mark as difficult buttons in here in the future, which were also missing from the old tests, as we feel you should be able to control the item like this from any test screen, but I’m getting ahead of myself.

If there’s anything we’ve missed, please let us know!

What’s Next?

As I mentioned, Learn with Locals should also include Video Typing and Video Tapping tests, and these are coming next. Also, at the moment when you end a session, you are taken straight to the dashboard, which isn’t what we want. We’re building out a new End of Session screen to show your progress, leaderboards and what you learnt, as well as giving you an easy way to start your next session. This is coming up next!

Psst these are the designs, so the final developed feature may be sliiiightly different

Hi Luke,

I’ve tried 3 or 4 run-throughs on my iPad with Spanish 1 and 2. It all seemed quite straight forward. The only things that threw me slightly were, when I tried the “I don’t know” button the next video loaded automatically instead of me having to tap on it (intentional?) and the flower icon always seemed to remain unchanged (grey but fully grown) both before and after a correct answer. Should the ‘greying’ be replaced by ‘colour’?

It will be good to have the typing and tapping alternatives when available.

Having done a few runs in the new learn with locals personally I like the more efficient use of screen space and it feels the videos are running more smoothly now although that could just be on my end, overall a pretty big improvement IMO, one thing I would like to note (although I can’t offer much in the way of a solution and it’s not a huge issue so take it with a grain of salt I suppose ) is personally I’ve noticed my brain constantly trying to click the “I don’t know” button due to the relatively similar size general out of focus look of the next button on features like “listening skills”, not a huge issue as it may only be with the way I’m processing the page, well done and ty for all your work Memrise team. :heavy_heart_exclamation:

(apologies if this is the wrong place to put this, I’d happily delete and reupload it somewhere else if needed)

I was wondering also if it would be okay to upload a short video (~28s) using the new learn with locals feature to showcase it to friends and family who only use the ios version? I’d be more than happy to send it to an admin or something in pm to be pre-viewed, if not that’s also completely understandable and fine.

Have a nice day

I’m definitely going to look into this, as this could be a common issue for folks!

No worries at all on the video! Go for your life and upload whatever videos of Memrise you would like

Good catch on the flower. That’s definitely a bug.

On the autoplaying video - it is intentional to have it play, but how did this make you feel? Did it surprise you? Did it annoy you?

Only minor surprise the first time (having got used to the new procedure of starting the videos manually up until that point) but the ‘penny quickly dropped’ that the autostart now only applies when the “I don’t know” button is hit…

alanh - does it then autoplay everytime? It should autoplay after you’ve first manually played it once (that’s a browser limtiation, for good reasons!)

If not, what browser are you using? And what’s the exact behaviour you’re seeing?

Hi Francis,

This is what I’m currently seeing:

On my laptop (Firefox), the first item displays the grey video box and I need to click on it for it to play. A correct answer leads to the video for the next item autoplaying and so on following correct answers. So, no issues there.

On my iPad (Safari), the first item also displays the grey video box and I need to tap on it for it to play. But, then, a correct answer here takes me to the next item and the grey video box is back which needs tapping to play the video. Another correct answer repeats that behaviour and so on. If, having played a video, I then tap on the “I don’t know” button, it shows me the correct answer (again with a greyed out video box, whereas on the laptop, the video and audio autoplay at this point). If, I then tap on the “Keep going” button (without first playing the video), the video for the next item loads and the audio plays but I need to tap the video for it to play. A correct answer here takes me to the next item and a greyed out video box is bck again which I then need to tap to play and to hear the audio. Now I’m used to the slightly different behaviours, it’s not a problem.
