##JAPANESE STORY CONTEST - HOSTED BY POTATO_CHIP_CAT

Hello there, my fellow Memrise learners. :cat2:

Iā€™ve held some language-related contests on other language sites that turned out to be a great learning experience for everyone, including myself. Ever since Iā€™ve gotten active in the Memrise community, Iā€™ve met so many wonderful people here, and wanted to do something to give back to them. However, Iā€™ve noticed a lack of contests here. Based on my previous experiences, educational contests serve to motivate and inspire learners to give their best shot, and have fun while doing so. This is why I have started a Japanese story-writing contest, right here on Memrise! :smiley_cat:

###HOW TO JOIN
Itā€™s quite simple, really. Just read through this discussion post, and submit a story in a post below. Be sure to follow the rules, or your story might get disqualified. :frowning2:

###RULES FOR YOUR STORY

  • No rude language, swear words, or inappropriate content. We have users of Memrise of all ages, and it isnā€™t very considerate to use such language in a open contest for anyone, right? Thanks for understanding! :smile:
  • **Translators, whether from an app, website, or another person, are NOT allowed.**This is a contest judging your creativity and fluency in Japanese, not one on your ability to use a translator! :laughing:
  • Youā€™re allowed to use any one of the three types of Japanese script to write your story. Whether you cheese to use hiragana, katakana, kanji, or maybe a mix between two, any type of Japanese script is acceptable for this contest. :relaxed:
  • Your story must be at least 500 characters long, but under 1500 characters long. I really do appreciate your enthusiasm, but we donā€™t want to overwhelm the other contestants now, do we? :fearful:
  • Submit your entry before the deadline, December 1st, 2016. This contest isnā€™t going to last forever, unfortunately. Any entries submitted after the deadline have to be disqualified. So donā€™t make that mistake! :confounded:
  • Be original. Plagiarism is never the right thing to do. We all have marvelous minds, why not use them? Itā€™s rather unsportsmanlike to take ideas generated by another person, no? :slight_smile:

###JUDGING
All entries submitted that follow the rules listed above will be judged on December 1st by me, a native Japanese speaker. I will decide who the winners are based on creativity, usage of words, sentence structure, plot, and anything else that makes for a good tale. :grinning:

###PRIZES
I wish I could give you prize money, or a brand new Porche. But we all know thatā€™s, unfortunately, a far-fetched thought thatā€™s impossible, at the moment. However, I will announce the 5 winners the day after judging, and give each one of you a surprise trophy. Good luck everyone! :smile:

###SOME TIPS FOR YOU

  • You could write about an incident in your life, or a dream you have had.
  • Give your story a catchy title so that it will catch the eye of other writers.
  • Like other entries that you enjoyed reading! This contest is not based on likes whatsoever, so feel free to comment on and express your opinion or suggestion on someoneā€™s story.
  • Set this contest thread to ā€œWatchingā€, so that youā€™re alerted of any activity concerning your story, or results.
  • Try to add in some dialogue. Conversation always makes a story more interesting.

###LIST OF CONTESTANTS

  • None so far, why not join? :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

Thank you so much for taking the time to read through this contest post. If you decide to join, please tell me so in a private message, so I may add you to the list of contestants. Or if youā€™re just looking through, I would thoroughly appreciate it if you could tell anyone you know who might be interested in this contest about it. If you have any questions, donā€™t hesitate to ask me below, and I will get back to you as fast as possible with an answer. Iā€™m looking forward to reading the exciting stories you guys are going to submit. Till then, jaa ne!!! :yum:

@Potato_Chip_Cat ~ FYI, 01/12/16 has already passed. I assume you mean 01/12/17.

@pdao
No, I meant the first of December. =)
Should I arrange it differently?

EDIT: Corrected. Thank you very much. :relaxed:

I was just editing my post. We use the format mm/dd/yy, I forgot that others use dd/mm/yy. Sorry, my bad.

@pdao

I suppose this will confuse some usersā€¦should I just change it to a word-form date? :thinking:

Itā€™s your call. Since Memrise is a trans-national product, and date formats obviously differ depending on where one resides, it might be safe to use a word-form date. I know I would, but that is how I roll. Just consider your target audience, and go with what would make sense to them.

Good luck with your contest !

A great idea for a contest! Unfortunately, Iā€™m not at that level of Japanese yet to participate. Good luck with your contest!

P.S. Omae no purofiiru shashin waā€¦Hetalia no mochi desu ka? :laughing:

Woah, omae? Thatā€™s harsh :confused:

My profile pic is called Sayamaru. Anyways good luck with running the contest!

@MarikoMiz
Gomenne, Iā€™m used to talking to my guy friends and such. :bow:
I find it hard to switch between tene and tamaguchi. XP

Thanks, Mariko! ^.^

Iā€™d join but I donā€™t speak Japanese.
Iā€™ll be on the lookout for good stories tho!

@Potato_Chip_Cat I think this is an excellent idea, and you should be commended for your creativity, initiative, and and the positive contribution that you are already making to the Memrise community! :grinning:

I donā€™t speak any Japanese, so I canā€™t participate, but I hope you and the participants have a lot of fun with the contest!

I hope you enjoy them. ^.^

Oh a great idea! Too bad I didnā€™t see it until now, when the deadline already passedā€¦

I was not even aware of this contest until now. Did anyone submit their story? If you ever did something like this again, I might participate, although if it were right now, itā€™d be in poor, broken Japanese lol.
