The styling is too heavy for japanese characters here’s an example that takes a while to figure out what character it is, there are even worse cases where all you see is just a blob.
Using Firefox in Linux.
I used to have styling to get over it but after redesign it stopped working.
Now, please don’t tell me to use windows and install chrome… at least let users pick font/styling if you don’t want to deal with this mess.

the first one kanji is 勢い the second one is 醤油
feel free to look them up in dictionary if you feel there’s no problem with shape and it’s ok to learn the characters this way.
And this is how the character is displayed after failing. So basically it’s only an issue during normal review, with the ways questions are styled. I’m guessing it might be related to how linux handles font anti aliasing.

Please do not forget an important detail.
At the official website, Memrise is adjusting its font style for official courses.
From the figures you’ve shown, you’re doing a user-created course. Very soon, user-created courses will only be accessed by the Decks site (link here). It would be good for you to test these courses on the Decks website.
