I have it on only one - whatever it is - but it is still deafeningly loud.
What are you using to study? Web browser on your computer?

There are always/sometimes 3 symbols at the top that seem to indicate volume and only one of these is on but it is still very loud - but some words more than other (Basic Viable Spanish) - I think it is just something I will have to live with.

Do you mean these?
Those are not volume controls they are just indicators that the particular item you are viewing has audio files attached (one symbol for each file). Hovering the mouse over them will let you hear the different recordings.
But, if you look for a similar symbol in the bar at the bottom of your screen (probably to the right hand side near the time and date display) and click on that, you will find a volume control tool.
