Is there a way to set a preference for learning methods, such as multiple choices vs typing in the answers?

In my set I’ve noticed that there are far more multiple choices than typing-in kind of questions. Now although I fully appreciate the multiple choice questions, my personal preference is that by manually typing in the answers, I can memorise the words more effectively. I certainly don’t mind a few multiple choice questions here and there but I would like to see more typing kind of questions. Is there a way to set the preference a bit more towards typing?

Thanks!

There is no way.

However if you are using a web version, I know that there are user created scripts that allow to have only typing questions.

If you’ve chosen no-typing courses, you’ll get multiple choice questions during learning and later when reviewing.

As Rodyzi said, there is a script for Firefox and Chorme, Memrise All Typing, that will force no-typing courses to ask you to type when reviewing. When you’re learning in typing course, you’ll still get 2 multiple choice, 1 typing, 2 more multiple choice, and 1 more typing for each new word. (I think it works like that when using the script on a no-typing course, too, but I don’t have any no-typing courses, so I can’t say for sure…)

If you prefer to use the app, look for courses that don’t say “no-typing” in their course title or course description. That won’t guarantee a typing course, but it’ll help you to eliminate what you’re not looking for.

It’s not clear from your question whether you are using memrise on the web, or the Android app, or the iOS app. Also not clear whether it’s one or a few specific courses, or you’re taking a lot of different courses and having the same experience.

Overall, the web gives a much much more effective learning experience, and I recommend sticking to memrise on the web if you can. Some courses are explicitly designed as multiple choice courses, but most courses seem to be typing courses. In those, memrise will still give you multiple choice when learning new words, and will also give you multiple choice when you are late to review something. For example if you were supposed to review a word in 1 day but you don’t get to it until a week later, it will be multiple choice on that review, but will go back to typing for the next review if you get the multiple choice right.
