I have set Memrise’s interface language to English via the main website but I am not able to do that on the iOS mobile phone app. For example, if I am using Japanese as my phone’s language the Memrise app will be automatically be using that as its language. Is there any way to change/fix that? (e.g. Memrise interface in English on a iPhone that has Japanese as the language being set on the phone).
Thanks and apologies if this has already been asked.
Just to add to what Olaf has said, there is something that is possible on the iOS app which may help. It only works for ‘official’ Memrise language courses though (ie not for courses created by users). My account is set to English on both the Memrise website and on the iOS app on my iPad, so all my courses have English as the ‘from’ language.
On the iOS app I can, for example, add the Memrise “Spanisch 1” course for German speakers (without affecting my other courses). Not all language pairs are available though and, if you select a pair that is not available, you will be offered the English version instead.
From your course list on the iOS app, tap on the yellow “+ Learn another course” button.
Tap the language you want to learn.
Tap the grey “Browse more courses” button.
Tap the grey “I speak” button and then choose the relevant language.
Start learning the course.
As an example, I am learning the ‘official’ Memrise Spanish courses and can add “Ingles (Reino Unido)1” to my dashboard, which lets me learn both ways.
Not sure if this helps get you to where you want to be.
Hi and thanks both for your replies! The course is already in English and the issue is not about the course’s content but the Memrise application’s language.
According to my experience and to @Olaf.Rabbachin’s message it seems like the app it’s default to the phone’s system language with no option of overriding that. Whilst this is somewhat expected behaviour it would have been killer for an application learning app like Memrise to give users the flexibility of choosing Memrise’s language. If anybody from Memrise is reading this or will read this maybe this could be potential feature although I may be the only one with such niche need
Hi @LorenzoVogelsang68. As Olaf mentioned, unfortunately it’s not possible to change the Memrise interface language without changing the phone settings. We do have an open feature request ticket for this actually, so I will add your comments to this
