Introductory Spanish 1, "cuánto cuesta"

This is regarding the

¿Cuánto cuesta?

phrase under Survival Kit in Spanish 1.

Cuesta means a hill or slope, generally. So why does “How much does it cost?” translate to “¿Cuánto cuesta?” and not “¿Cuánto el coste?”

“Cuánto cuesta” seems more like “How much the slope”, hence my confusion.

“cuesta” here is the verb “costar” (to cost) in third-person singular form, simple present tense.
