Important Update: Upcoming changes to Memrise community-created courses

That are really sad news for an awesome app like Memrise. Replacing self made courses with a mobile website is letting them die slowly and painfully. All the courses I did so far are either made by me or some other awesome people and it’s a shame that you will treat them as the unwanted relative now. Especially that I can’t learn offline anymore or don’t have an app at all is enough reason for me to look for an alternative to Memrise.

Hi, i am also a pro user and using the website AND the Apps for official, non official and my own created courses.
I am sad to see the platform dying, where i spent one to two hours every day since years, so Memrise is currently part of my life…
But it seems this time is over soon… :sleepy::sleepy:

Do you realise that an internet connection is not easily accessible everywhere?
It doesn’t matter how good the mobile site is, if I am living in a country with a firewall, or in a country with very crappy internet, or if the internet where I live costs 100€/month.

So just make a clear distinction on the website between official and non official courses!
Don’t make it impossible for a big part of your community to access their courses offline!
You are taking away from us the biggest reason for which we chose to pay a membership :frowning:

People in the Memrise management have been intent on destroying the platform for years now (MR was pretty much perfect around 2014 as far as I am concerned). I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I hope someone is held accountable for this and fired.

Each update to Memrise leaves me more and more flabbergasted. This is one of the last nails remaining in the coffin.

Maybe also another channel as this forum would be good, to inform the decision maker, that we are not really happy about this new way…
Any ideas?

@sejo2, I believe Kevin above is the CEO, so they were well aware of the ****storm the decision would cause and brought in the big guns.

I am a pro user with MULTIPLE subscriptions in the family, and have recommended memrise extensively to others. I find this change horrible, this will mean that i will not be able to use community courses on my computer, which is my proffered way of study, nor offline in the app wich is my second preference. This will in effect render my pro subscription useless wich in turn will mean YOU WILL LOOSE ALL THE PAYING COSTUMERS in our family. Please reconsider. I do not want a free decks app, I want to keep to continue using the service I have been paying for.

You mean in a web browser on a computer? That should still be fine.

@kevin5284 Offline is the main reason I pay my subscription. It lets me learn on the London Underground, trains and flight where there is no internet and when I’m abroad where I don’t have access to the local network.

I was a university language student, all my friends at university used memrise to review vocabulary we learnt in courses.

The Arabic and Turkish courses I’ve done via Memrise have been great. However, I’m currently learning Hindi and Romanian, neither of which are available as Memrise courses. As a way to enable this, could you identify some highly-used, high-quality language courses and approach the creators to turn these into established courses.

FYI I’m a Product Owner working on mobile applications for financial services in London. I’m highly interested in language-learning and would happily take part in any focus groups you may wish to run.

I agree with so many of the people who have already commented. I purchased a pro subscription purely to use the offline mode on my mobile device. I have a busy job, and most of the time I find to accomplish my language goals is on airplanes or while traveling in places where I do not access to mobile data.
Forcing the user-created content onto a mobile website defeats the purpose for me. The best courses I’ve found on Memrise are the user-created ones, not the (very limited) official ones. I certainly won’t re-subscribe next year. I’ve recommended Memrise to so many people, but now I’ll have to search for a new method.

Also is it possible to gain a bit more info on the not available features? For example it says (besides offline) that there is no app for decks?! How can you have no app in the mobile age? Right now the statement causes nothing but panic amongst customers, myself included and I simply cannot believe you just put it out there a couple weeks before it is already March.

I’ve paid for the premium to get all the features in Memrise language courses. However, community courses are also important part of the service. Is it possible to cancel and get refund for my yearly subscription as content is getting removed?

It’s important to me that you understand the impact that this change will have, so I’ve just canceled my pro subscription. I would be pleased to resubscribe if I can continue to use this very valuable service.

Hello!

If I can’t have all of my learning in the same place anymore I will cancel my paid subscription for Memrise and find another service where I can. This is really bad for the users. Please tell me why I should continue using, or even paying for, Memrise after this change?

Community courses are why I keep using and be a pro user.
Learning with the webpage is extremely inconvenience.
You’re ruining a great app, then your business.

Sorry, Memrise. I will be harsh.

TL;DR. I see this as a sort of betrayal and definitely will not renew my subscription (account on memrise doesn’t match the forum one - for historical reasons). Not being able to use community courses offline for me is a deal breaker.

While your courses are good, the community variety was the main reason why I have got a subscription. And the ability to use it offline on the go, while commuting. Mobile-friendly websites and so on could be a great hipster fad but it just do not work. If I have a good connection I can use platforms with richer content, sorry.

Your own courses… they do not have grammar exercises (at least for my languages), they miss good “memes” to learn words. When one had finished your course he was able to find advanced topics and vocabulary blocks - no more.

What I see here, in fact, that community courses just competed with your ones and with the paid subscriptions. If one could get a good community course, why he should pay for your course that is behind a paywall?

I enjoyed studying through the application for all the courses, isn’t the course made by the community able to complete the course on the application? There are a lot of language courses made by the community not being owned by the official course, isn’t that a good thing? I only hope 1. It would be better if it “deck” became an application than a website 2. I will able to learn through the application even if it made course through sister site 3. Memrise can subtract its official course (add the languages even to the unpopular languages and make a more useful course) 4. The course makers can continue to work because you guys have been very helpful to many people and you are wonderful.

I just canceled my subscription.

I’ve learnt around 10 000 words using Memrise and have created several courses. I’m going to delete those courses as well since if I won’t be studying them; I will not have the time to maintain them.

I’ve recommended Memrise to many but will start recommending against Memrise since you really don’t seem to care about your paying users.

You are murdering the app by killing the main functionality why older users are paying for the subscription. Bold move. I will have to cancel my subscription then.
