Important Update: Upcoming changes to Memrise community-created courses

No Offline mode!!! Goodbye memrise

If this is supposed to be an improvement then some serious convincing explanation is needed.

A short email from Ed Cooke with “we want to reassure you that very little will actually change” is not really helpful, especially as the changes are far reaching for many.

Won’t someone convince me that this is going to be a good thing!?!?!? Please.

The most senior person in Memrise (Ed Cooke) sent you a letter this morning with an announcement about these changes. They have made up their minds.

Thank you, I just wrote to the support team:
Since memrise will no longer support offline mode to learn community created courses on your mobile app and since this is a feature, which I most definitively need, and since this was a reason to subscribe to the pro version, I would ask you to refund part of my payment for a lifetime subscription. I was referred to you by Kevin Memrise, who promised that you will respond quickly.
I am keen to see when and what they will respond.

Can’t you cancel it?

“apologise to those of you who are using offline mode to learn community created courses on our mobile app”

Is there any substitution or possibility for those group to use older version of app?

" we’re not planning at the moment to have a separate app for Decks, and it wasn’t an easy decision "

IF: (At the moment = NOW) => When you are planning to change this decision?

Forget it, it is a corporate “correct” speech. Like politicians, you know?

@kevin5284 - To maintain any sort of usability, having an app and offline capability it imperative. Is this something that Memrise is considering doing with Decks at all?

I’ve put hours of effort into creating my “community created courses” and I’d like to be able to continue to use them.

Kind regards,
Nicki

If a ton of people stop using memrise they’ll be forced to reconsider. It’s clear that this decision is pure business but it seem they forgot that offline mode is very important.

Just cancelled my pro subscription. The Memrise Pro courses are nothing exceptional or different from Duolingo or the million other language learning apps that teach dominant languages. I used Memrise to learn and teach indigenous languages, languages not found on Duolingo, community created content that set Memrise apart from others. Not having a mobile app is a deal breaker. I’m a software engineer, and mobile-friendly site is 100% an inferior product.

Notice to any software engineers out there: If you’re interested a competing product, one that makes money BECAUSE of the community, not in spite of it, shoot me a message!

Wow this sounds amazing, definitely going to send an email.

It is a nice thought that it will be free for all but I think it is unfair for them who paid.
I also would like to continue to use it on my desktop PC with the webpage.
I don’t have space enough to run it on my phone andf also I can read and type better on my deskto PC

oh you remind me of the fact, that I can’t use other alphabets on my computer. That is again a disadvantage for me personally as I study languages with different alphabets. It is easy using the app, but almost not possible for me on the computer.

Why don’t you call your new project “Leprosorium by Memrise for language geeks and freaks”? It’s not as dull and stupid as Decks and would cheer us all up a little bit in this gloomy winter day.

It’s trivial to set up on Windows.

@nphx I do have the keyboard installed but I don’t know where to find the letters.

I guess I understand if you’re learning Chinese or something like that, but you can learn to type using, say, Greek or Russian alphabets extremely quickly.

Check out Keyboard Stickers in your target language on Amazon. That will help you get over this problem.

@nphx
I tried many times but it is really inconvenient for me. Of course it is technically possible, but for me personally, it takes so much time. I actually don’t know how it is these days, but back then i only had like a specific amount of time to write the correct word or expression and couldn’t make it because of that.
