Important announcement about Decks

Sure. But remember that companies and economics change from month to month so why worry about that and it’s better to spend the time leaning languages.

Noooo, Why was that! I was so excited and appreciated your decision about Decks, please don’t close Decks that the only way that I learn new language.

Hey there,

I have replied to this but it seems it was not clear enough so I will try to clarify it once again but I won’t be going around in circles on this topic as it does not seem to go anywhere.

We do collect feedback from MANY sources: that being the forum (all threads and this particular one about this decision), store reviews, our help channels (when you contact us from the app or the help section on web), users that we talk to directly, user feedback sessions where we invite users to the office, etc. We do that just like probably every other company does it.

I have already mentioned how we are sharing the feedback between the different teams and those teams will analyse and take the appropriate decisions they need to take in order to iterate the product.

I have seen plenty of questions about one specific topic so I will try to address it in particular. We are closing down Decks. Decks was a very specific solution we tried to implement and it had very specific set of requirements. All your community created courses will be accessible on Memrise where they have always lived. Memrise has a different set of needs. That means that unfortunately some of the features that you have been using in Decks for free, are part of the paid features on Memrise, including Difficult Words, for example.

While many of you will find this disappointing, we need to find ways to make our company profitable and having a paid subscription is the way we do that at the moment. You can, and you will always be able to use the free tier which will give you all the non pro features for free, allowing you to learn our or your own courses and use all our test types and algorithms. At the moment we are not looking at changing what modes are included in the paid subscription. I hope you all can understand the reasons that is the case and I hope that addresses the doubts you had around this question.

Kindest,
Jesus

Hi all again!

As we announced we will be closing down Decks today. The time: 16:00 UK time.

Just to reiterate

What will change?

From the 25th of February, the Decks website will be closed and all traffic will be redirected to the Memrise Website.

How will it affect you?

Your account, learning progress and any courses you have created or are learning will not be affected. They will be fully available on the Memrise website and app. We will deal with all the database migrations and necessary stuff so that you don’t lose out on any of the content you have created.

Thank you for your continuous support and we hope you can enjoy learning as always,
Jesus

I understand that you may want to change the imagery that went with the early incarnations of Memrise, but please - the colours! The bright orange/black is very distracting and unpleasant to work with for long periods. The Decks colours were much much better.

There is no free “difficult words” from now, but people are still talking about colors

Can you please do something about the hideous design of memrise and change it back to how it was before. It is ridiculously non-user-friendly, and you can’t easily see when you have words ready to review. In the sessions it is all very messy and harder than Decks to use. The lack of a clear colour scheme means it’s confusing whether you’re doing classic/difficult/speed etc.

No offence, but when decks launched I just kind of ignored it - I felt like it just made things more complicated. Not surprised at this decision, I think it was the right thing to do.

Argh. I was getting used to Decks. I preferred the design a hell of a lot more over the new Memrise one, plus the Difficult Words thing allowed me to access it on Decks. Mind, I did prefer the convenience of Memrise before the redesign and split. Just try and combine the two a tad and don’t let Decks become all but a distant memory.

As per the forum rules, we will not tolerate abusive or hateful language against anyone. That goes for users or staff. Criticism is welcome. Hate isn’t.

This is a place for everyone to feel welcome and we will not make this forum a place where people (users or staff) feel like they don’t want to be.

Hi there, you might like to update your banner as it still indicates a future event.

Community-created courses ARE COMING back to Memrise

Decks WILL SOON be closing down. This won’t affect your account or learning progress, it’ll be available here on Memrise along with all community-created courses.

In the decks app there are features that are available which are not available in the decks(only to paid users) will these features still be available with the community created courses? Features like ‘Difficult Words’

Considering Memrise seem to be paying attention to user feedback offered here, I wanted to add my agreement, and also some further points, to the comments that others have already made about the design/colour scheme of Memrise.

Having been moved over from Decks as a result of the site being closed, I find the design and colour scheme of Decks were superior to those used on Memrise in every way: The individual colours for the various kinds of learning made the site easier to navigate, while the use of white and blue meant the site provided a less intrusive background during the actual exercises. Moreover, I find the font used on Memrise is very difficult to read. (This is not a small problem: I use the site primarily for studying Japanese and Chinese and the way in which characters were rendered on Decks was much more legible; the sort of bold/bubble-font used by Memrise is ill-adapted to characters, making kanji in particular almost illegible.)

While the yellow/black colour scheme and the font might have made sense, in ‘brand image’ terms at least, when Memrise was devoted solely to courses developed by Memrise - and, as such, courses that could be tailored to the site -, the re-introduction of user-created courses means that Memrise needs, once again, to work with a wider variety of content. For this reason, I think it would be worth introducing the colour-scheme/fonts used on Decks, or some version of them, so that the Memrise site can better display the wider variety of content that is to be expected when user-created content is available.

As far as the loss of features that were available on Decks (e.g. ‘Difficult words’) is concerned, that is certainly unfortunate and it would be nice to see these features re-introduced so that user-created courses can be treated in the same manner on Decks as they were on Memrise. The problem, after all, appears to have been that users were unhappy with having to move between two apps - not necessarily that they were unhappy with the services provided on the ‘Decks’ app. (Given that it was possible to move all user-created courses from, and then back to, the Memrise site, I can only assume that these user-created courses are readily distinguishable from Memrise-created courses and that it should thus be possible to provide a specific set of features for user-created content.)

First of all, you are not being censored, since the message is visible clicking. So, drop the victim act.
Second, your message was flagged by criticism, that you love so much, so, hey, it’s good news

I sincerely don’t understand the entitlement here.

Difficult word feature for free in decks was explicitly a gift to compensate the discomfort of moving to a separate environment.

But nonetheless some of you were very aggressive and unfair at the time, claiming that the problem was the separation from the main site. Even, wishing memrise to go bankrupt, yippee. Also, defamation campaign with unfair feedback, etc.

So, now that the separation is undone, I would have expected you to be happy. But no, now again, you are aggressive and unfair, apparently claiming that you are entitled to free difficult words (wich you had not, before the separation).

I don’t get it. I don’t want to be disrespectful, but truly, I do NOT get it.
I don’t think you go into every shop and insult employees for prices that you consider too high or products you don’t like, am I right? Or, do you? I hope not.

As far as I am concerned I want to express full solidarity with the staff being violently attacked no matter what they do or say, and despite any effort put into play.

If I was at their place I certainly would have learnt from all this experience that it is better to not give anything for free, ever again.

It has already be said that memrise is perfectly in its rights to take any decision, and that an income is needed to stay alive: I strongly second that, but I think it is always worth repeating that memrise is made up of people, so, be respectful.

Cheers.

Just paid the subscription for the first time. I didn’t think I will miss “difficult words” so much.
Decks was a nice marketing plot haha!

I don’t really care but still, memrise’s comic sans font is kinda weird. What’s the rationale behind it?

There’s so little yellow left in the Memrise forum and mobile apps so for me I doubt it’s worth debating about. Compared with fixing bugs and adding new features.

As for difficult words, I rather have it as a paid service than Memrise being closed due to lack of income.

I bit of positive feedback from me.

A couple of weeks ago, I switched from using Decks to using the original Memrise platform (web-based) for learning Spanish, using user-created courses. I think the colour scheme, fonts, and layout are excellent as they are, at least for learning Spanish.

I was just thinking about buying the Lifetime subscription for $99.99, that pops up when clicking on the Difficult Words icon. Does “Lifetime” refer to the life of the company (Memrise) or to the subscriber’s life? Also, is the subscription priced in US dollars?

Thank you.
