I want to learn... MORE LANGUAGE OPTIONS

There are currently only 20 language courses available in iOS (under “I want to learn…”. You simply can’t browse any other languages. As you could previously. Is anyone else bothered by this change?

The language I’ve made courses for (English and Greek) are no longer available on iOS. You have to browse them in a browser to sign up. This had a stagnating effect on the number of users taking my courses.

One of my English courses was growing rapidly in popularity until this change happened and then the number of people froze at 1.2K users. I assume this list of languages was restricted to the 20 most popular languages (for efficiency). But it seems to really hinder the users who are interested in languages not included in the newly restricted list.
Then the user growth stopped dead in its tracks, because you simply can’t find it anymore on iOS. I guess the

I find this change really stupid as well. No-one asked for this, they didn’t put this on poll, but still went with it even though most people used them. The only way to get user-made courses is to login to a desktop version (or request desktop website on iOS) and search for the course.

This poll doesn’t quite address my current issue. I would say something like this, “Should the menu of available languages on mobile devices be all-inclusive, or should it be restricted to only the most popular languages.”

Currently there are only 20 languages available on mobile devices, not including English. And since you can’t SEARCH for courses at all (by name or by content), it’s essentially impossible to find any courses for languages outside of the select 20.

So if I want to recommend my course to a friend, the friend MUST log in on a browser.

Thanks for the help in any case. It would be nice if the result of such a poll would be the expansion of the language menu in iOS.

Do you think you could recreate this poll for me? I can’t seem to figure out how to create one on my own? I’m not even sure if it will help, but I hope it might.

Thank you!

I think I understand why they did this. On mobile devices, there are a lot more not-advanced users, and I wouldn’t be surprised that many of them complained to Memrise about the quality of user created courses without understanding that the Memrise team couldn’t fix them. One solution could have been to implement an option to display user created courses in the app. But I also understand that mobile applications have to stay as simple as possible, such that new not advanced users don’t feel lost
Also, we are not on Youtube, we don’t need to get as many users as possible for our courses ^^

Hmmm… I don’t seem to see that Options button. Maybe I have a lower-level account that doesn’t let me do that?

What about languages that don’t have Memrise-created content, such as Greek? I just posted a new Greek course that will probably never get a single user because you can’t find Greek courses on iOS.

A simple SEARCH feature would solve the problem, eve if Memrise kept the list of default languages restricted to the current 20.

The problem would be the same. Imagine a mobile user downloading the application because he wants to learn Greek. He finds a user-created course by any mean, but it happens that there are some obvious mistakes in it. Then the user writes a negative comment on the store like “Courses are full of mistakes” whereas Memrise is not responsible for those

I think the solution is simple, keep the mobile list as is - restricted to the 20 core languages and Memrise courses, but add a “+” (MORE OPTIONS) button that expands the menu to “user-created” courses. Then there will be a clear delineation between official/unofficial courses. The website accomplishes this by listing the top courses as “by Memrise”, followed by ALL of the other available courses by users. They don’t have any disclaimers that “Memrise is not responsible for the quality of user-created content”… But not even the website has this.

Memrise support can easily set up email filters that send automatic responses to people who complain about mistakes in user created courses. I don’t think this dichotomy between non-advanced mobile users and other advanced users even exists. But if it did, it should result in limiting the options of ALL users on the mobile platform. I literally can’t access an user-created content on my phone. It sucks.

I agree it could be an other solution. It just seems more complicated to implement and to maintain, and makes the application more complex.

I’d think that the average website user better understands how it works than the average mobile user. Furthermore, there is no store to write negative comments that you have visit before accessing websites.

I don’t think emails are a problem, I think it’s more about negative comments and grades on the store. And it doesn’t limit the options for all users, you can still learn user-created courses with the application

  • Mobile users SHOULD be able to browse and add user-created courses directly through the mobile app.
  • Mobile users SHOULD NOT be able to browse and add user-created courses directly through the mobile app.

i want new languages too like african

@MohammedSher_i i liked your poll

African language courses are available. You just need to start learning them on either the Memrise or Decks websites first and they will then sync over to your app.
