How to send a Private Message (aka PM or DM)

How to send a Private Message (aka PM or DM)

I thought I’d answer that specific question here in the “How to” section:

Like all things on computers there are at least three ways of doing things.

1) If you know the person’s Forum name go to your icon (aka Avatar) (at the top right), click and then click on the envelope and start a new message (it’s a PM).

Then enter the person’s Forum name in the first box (titled “Add a user”) (when you start typing the name, a list of names will appear which should include the person’s name if they are a forum member - click on their name). (NB You can also start with the “@” symbol if you wish).

In the next box, enter the title of your message (I always add “- PM” at the end of the line to make it clear).

Finally type your message and send it.

2) If you see a post and you want to PM the person, click on their name and then from the pop-up window choose “Message” (it’s a PM).

3) Similar but go to their home page description first, then “Message” in the top right corner.

4) Should you want to find your topic (or even theirs) so you can re-read the message first, go to your home page (as in 1) click on your name and then on the word “Activity” (it’s a button that turns red). All your posts should be listed.

If you haven’t commented on that thread before but can remember what it’s about, use the search facility (that’s the magnifying glass on the top right), and type a key word.

Try each and let us know if there are other ways.

This related information should be helpful too:

The way to get in touch with a COURSE Creator or Contributor is to look for the appropriate “[Course Forum]” post (search under subject or use the magnifying glass top right) or contact them directly - a PM (when your rank allows it).

Sadly not every course is supported in this way, nor are all the creators or contributors present here (ie you can NOT contact them if they have not visited this Forum yet.)

Thanks so much @DW7. I appreciate your clear response.

People could also read this related and interesting thread about getting “Basic User” status which allows you to send a PM, “Trust” levels etc, but it was started before the integrated Course Forums were deleted at the beginning of July 2016.

Information on the loss of integrated course forums and what we have done about it is here (if you have an hour or so to spare to read it!)

I am finding the lack of forums within a course a little frustrating. :weary:
It’s nice that I can contact course creators directly here in the forums, but not everyone is here. :disappointed:

I do hope that Memrise are able to sort something out for us in the near future.

I’ve just discovered another way to do this:

  1. Click the ... icon on a post.
  2. Select the :flag_black: icon.
  3. Choose the first option displayed.
  4. Enter the Private Message.
  5. Press Send.

I find that way easier however I think it connects your message to post you click on. Just something to be aware of as it might cause some confusion if your PM has nothing to do with the post.

Yes, there is an explanation of that particular method in > Badges > First Flag which seems to suggest it’s intended for use when you have an issue with what someone has posted.

I’m not sure if that means it’s drawn to the attention of the mods, though. Just something to be aware of, if you are contemplating using it.
