How to keep using the Memrise app for community courses

I’m planning to:

  • Download all my community courses for local use
  • Save my Memrise Android app .apk file (forever)
  • Block the app’s internet access
  • Never update the app
  • Using it as a purely local app.

Hopefully it works!

(Oh, and I’ll probably cancel my paid Memrise subscription.)

If there is a pressing economic reason for this (like the survival of the company), I wish they’d make that case. Then we could all stick together and live to fight another day.

Either way it is sad. I feel like I’ve watched it grow over time into a really awesome product and a great community.

Thanks.

I have download as many community courses as possible.

I already have automatic updates disabled.

How to do I backup the app data and the Memrise .apk file?

For anyone wanting to know how to block the app’s internet access on Android:

Settings> Data Usage> Mobile Data Usage> Memrise>

turn off Background Data
turn on Wi-Fi Disabled
turn on DataUsage disabled

After blocking the app’s internet access, remember to use the app in flight mode (mobile data and wi-fi turned off) otherwise the app will get stucking trying (and failing) to get internet access.

UPDATE: If a course isn’t loading on “Home” screen, switch back and forth to the “You” screen. If necessary restart your phone/ tablet.

Definitely viable, but not so much for someone like me who needs the courses to sync back and forth.
