How do you all balance your time learning and reviewing words after you’ve accumulated 10,000+ words? I’ve got close to 13,000 words and and it hasn’t been a problem, but I’m thinking that it’s going to get harder the more words I learn, especially if I add another language eventually like I’d like to.
I want to efficiently use my language learning time on and off Memrise and, thus, have plenty of time to immerse myself in natural materials, especially books. I can read modern, light novels in my target language with ease, but I still need to continue developing my vocabulary so I can enjoyably read the more literary works that I’m passionate about.
I’m sure this varies greatly, but I was curious to see what balance people have found between learning new words, review, and immersion in books, podcasts, movies (etc.) for native speakers.
If you have completed several courses and have already spent some time reviewing them, switch to reviewing, in turn, each course exclusively for a period (maybe a week or two) - then move on to reviewing the next course on your list, and so on.
And, within each course, you could review each level, before moving on to reviewing the next. This works well for courses that consist of levels that relate to specific themes, particularly for someone studying those themes from a textbook and/or as part of a taught course.
I think that reading is a very effective method for solidifying the vocabulary in the mind. A feature of Memrise courses (for English speakers) is that they mostly train you to translate from English into the foreign language, while reading requires the opposite. So, in a sense, you’re re-discovering the vocabulary in the opposite direction, which is excellent for retention and probably creates some kind of natural language acquisition process.
I can advise you the books that I read, I think this will also be very useful to you. First of all, I advise you to evaluate the site https://freebooksummary.com/drums-girls-and-dangerous-pie-chapter-8-summary-123634 which contains a huge library. I am now reading it there, and I think it will be very useful to you too. Very convenient, very simple, and a whole bunch of books, a very useful resource to read.
