When looking at a course, is there a way to determine how many words there are in total? I know that if I start learning a course, I will see a progress bar (197/1017 learned, for example), but sometimes I would like to know the total count before I begin learning.

Hi, if you multiply the listed no. of course hours by 60, the answer will give you the approximate number of items in a course.
No, they only way is to press ‘Start Learning’, view the first word, exit and check the course main page… Good feature request: show the number of items, next to the number of levels, why not?
Is it OK if I make this request into a feature request?
