How many students are following a course

As a course creator, is there a way to determine how many members have selected to study the course over time? I know keeping a lot of stats was not deemed a priority previously, but just knowing the total number of course subscribers would help creators know if they are on the right track regarding subject and design.

Hi @Gufino,

From your profile page, select “Courses” and then “Teaching”. In the bottom left hand corner of each course tile is the number of people who have studied it. The figure displayed is updated daily and represents the total number of learners who have started the course not necessarily the number who completed it or who are currently taking it. For any courses with more than a thousand learners, if you hover over the number, it will display the actual figure.

Go to your profile. Go to “courses” then to “teaching”, and you’ll see the courses you’ve made.
On the bottom left of each course you should see the number of total students.

This does not work always. If you want to be sure check out All time score table (if there is relatively small amount of users taking your course0

Hi @Atikker,

Yes, this is a good alternative if the number is not too big
or there can be a lot of page loading and scrolling needed.

What problems have you had with the profile page method? I check my courses most days and everything seems ok for mine since they did the fix last year.

@alanh ~ I agree with @Atikker’s view on how to assess the number of users of a course.

I don’t really make a big deal about the number of users in any of my courses, but I have noticed for a long time that the numbers of course users on my profile page (“teaching”) and the number of users on the all-time points leaderboards for courses rarely agree.

I just checked again today and can cite two current course examples: in the first one the teaching page states 29 in the course, while the leaderboard shows 12. In the second one, the teaching page states 15, while the leaderboard shows 3. This has been consistent behavior for a long time (not just with these 2 courses, but many of them). I don’t even bother with comparisons for courses with larger number of participants.

I suspect that maybe Memrise might count people who pop in for a course overview but never actually begin learning on the course as a user on the teaching page, while their lack of any points would account for them not appearing on the course leaderboard. (I would have no idea if there were more users on the leaderboard than on the teaching page.)

Not a big deal in my world though. I view Memrise as a teaching/learning tool, not as a vibrant example of perfect arithmetic.

What I do with my courses to get a rough idea how many people have completed my courses is: Look at total items in course (say 560 items), divide that by 2 (so 280 in this case), multiply by 1000 points (so 280,000 in this case). I then look at All Time scores for that course to see how many people passed that cut-off.

Reason: Learning 5 items gives you ~1700 points. Reviewing 10 items gives you ~1700 points as well. So 10 items learned and reviewed at least once is 5100 points or 510 points per item. While not perfect, assigning 500 points per item gives a good idea that people reviewed all the items enough to cover that spread or are very close to finishing.

I think we should all start Gufino’s course. Because reasons.

@pdao, @Atikker,

Thanks! I hadn’t realized those discrepancies existed.

I have now done a comparison for my courses and was surprised by how big some of the differences are. Others were quite small.

All of my course leaderboards have varying numbers of people with “0” scores at the bottom (the ‘just looking’ people described above by @pdao) but, when these are taken into account, there is still a discrepancy between the teaching page and the leaderboard. I also found three examples where, when the listed "0"s are included, the leaderboard total is higher than the teaching page!

Thank you both for putting me straight on this!

@alanh ~ I also find it odd that sometimes Memrise counts my participation in the courses I create (on the teaching page), and sometimes not.

For example, I have a few courses where I am the only user, and sometimes the total count of users is 0, sometimes it is 1. Sometimes another user joins in and the count should be 2, but it is only 1. Very erratic numbering. (The course leaderboards seem correct. The issue seems to be with the teaching page figures).

I don’t make a big deal about it. I use Memrise to learn, not to keep track of user statistics.
