How do you advance to new content?

I started a paid Icelandic course a week ago, and I keep getting the same 50 vocabulary words presented to me and reviewed over and over. How do I advance to new content? Where are the other lessons, and the grammar? I’m already on Level 9 and have learned nothing but vocabulary.

Please provide the direct URL of the course on the web portal and link it here.

What else did you expect to learn? Is pronunciation or listening also offered on this course?

Hi Scott,

this is a user-created course.
As you can see, it exactly has only two levels where each level contains 25 words.

So the max words you can learn with this course is 50!

Why don’t you encroll into a different / bigger Islandic course?
e.g official Islandic-1 (missing parts 6-7!!!) by Memrise: https://www.memrise.com/course/1638446/icelandic-1/

All courses (from English): https://www.memrise.com/courses/english/icelandic/

The longer the duration field, e.g 28h, 65h, the more content (levels, words) a Memrise course has no matter if official by staff or user-created.

4h Traveller: https://www.memrise.com/course/20876/basic-travellers-icelandic/
28h Beginner: https://www.memrise.com/course/134020/beginners-icelandic/
65h: https://www.memrise.com/course/536/icelandic-flash-cards/
69h First 5000: https://www.memrise.com/course/72275/first-5000-icelandic-words/

Before you start the really bigger ones, it would make IMHO more sense to early focus for the first 2-5 courses on keywords like “Beginner”, “Traveller”, “Introduction”, “Basic” to be able to complete them sooner.

Any questions?

You are on Memrise, a flashcard based application (like AnkiSRS, SuperMemo, etc.).

Most courses are plain “vocabulary courses” where levels most only contain single words.
A few courses might also contain some phrases, sentences (or mixed), traveller stuff, sentence connectors, etc.

My offical Portuguese BR 1-7 courses (created by Memrise) also include a few phrases/sentences in addition to single words.

It depends on the author who created the course content!

If you want to search for grammar:
The course explicitely would have to contain the keyword “grammar” in the course titel.
I have not taken those grammar or verb conjugation courses on Memrise yet.

For Portuguese (BR) I rely on DuoLingo which teaches me grammar (many available “tips and notes” like French) (Islandic is not available AFAIK) or to learn a few phrases and to see some sentences (incl. tenses) in action and learn a bit from “conversion modules” (two person dialogs) I started additionally using www.mondly.com (for PT BR).

For Spanish (see my Memrise profile) I had e.g found a Memrise course which contained quite long sentences, where you can practice listening and they require you to translate (what you heared) it into the target language.

With activated Tampermonkey user scripts on the Memrise web portal like Cooljingle’s “all typing”, I would be then required to type exactly what I heared and Memrise verifies my answer.

If you are Pro member, some offical European courses (1-7 parts) from the Membus project might include more challenges (listening, grammar, listening to native speakers, etc.) than which is (not) available for other languages like Portuguese Brazil.

Table matrix for Pro: https://www.memrise.com/premium/

With Pro you are not buying Memrise courses!!

It is to me pretty obvious, that just one offical Islandic (1) course (created by Memrise staff) can not provide that much content as is available in the other offical courses French 1-7, Italian 1-7, Spanish (EU/Spain) 1-7.

To search for intermediate / advanced content:
You usually will use those keywords “intermediate” and “advanced” to exactly find those user-created courses.
Sorry for not having better news for you.
