I freaking hate this feature! It’s constantly taking my mind off trying to learn.
I’m trying to recognize the word, and there is a little picture with either the kana or the kanji trying to seduce me into reading it instead of actually remembering the word! I hate it! Somebody please tell me how to disable this!
I really like memrise, but surprisingly (to some people maybe) enough this one little feature is really making me consider just stopping my use of memrise and swapping platforms. This is really messing up my learning! I don’t even know what this feature is called either, so I can’t even look it up on the forums!

What the hell is the point if it will just tell me the answer right above where I’m reading the question at? It’s practically begging me to read it!?!?!?
I completely agree. Additionally , the color-coding of the courses just increases your contextual awareness as well. So I would prefer to just dispense with these “features” altogether.
Just make your own course. This isn’t a “feature of Memrise”, as in something that always appears, it’s just the way the person who made the course set things up.
Just putting this out there, but there are tons of other courses on Memrise, and none of the ones that I’ve taken use attributes in that way. It was a decision made by whoever made that particular course. It seems like a strange approach to me, but maybe they had a reason that I’m not aware of in setting it up that way.
I would suggest looking for other courses if you can’t get a response from the course creator, before abandoning Memrise altogether. It’s still a fantastic tool for learning vocabulary, in my opinion; you just need to find the courses that work for you.
Not to undermine the hard work that no doubt went into creating the official courses, but they are far from the ‘end-all’ courses. I’ve been learning Japanese on Memrise for about two and a half years now, and I’ve only taken courses that were either created by other users or ones that I created myself.
I can’t say too much about the quality of the official courses because I haven’t taken them, but I can say that there are a lot of great user-made courses on Memrise, that I feel unfortunately get overlooked by many these days, due to the official ones getting pushed to the top of each category’s search results.
If something’s rubbing you the wrong way in one course, have a look around for another one that better fits what you’re looking for.
I don’t know what level you’re at with Japanese, but if you’re just starting out, I’d personally recommend the following courses, made by jlptbootcamp. These are the first three courses that I took on Memrise, in order:
I’ve never taken an official memrise language course in the 4+ years I’ve been using memrise AFAIK. I already found good courses for several languages (and a bunch of other topics) before memrise even made any official ones. If you dislike a particular course, look for another - I’ve found plenty of courses I disliked in my years here as well, but there’s no need to stick with a course that doesn’t work for you.
