How can new users add community-created courses?

Dear all,

Currently I’m teaching Dutch as a volunteer to a group of Russian people and I wanted to give them a kickstart, so I created my own beginners course. Unfortunately some people don’t seem to be able to add my course. Not only on the app but neither on the website. Not on the phone, and neither on a desktop. Also, the layout seems to be different for everyone, so it’s incredibly hard to guide them to the right buttons for extra options. Is Memrise deliberately shielding the community-created courses from new users? Might it be browser dependent? Does anyone have any tips?

Thanks in advance!

Hi Mark and welcome to the forum,

Is it this course: Нидерландский с нуля - by mark84nl - Memrise ? If so, I was able to add it to my dashboard on the web version and then open it on both versions of the app (Samsung Galaxy phone and Apple iPad) and the layout on all three versions looked OK. For anyone who doesn’t know, community-ceated courses have to be started on the web version before they will sync to either version of the app. On first visit to the app (after stating on the web), it is usually necessary to drag down the course list in order to get a newly added course to appear.

I’m not aware of any “deliberate shielding” so, apart from the usual steps of logging out and back in, uninstalling and reinstalling the app to make sure of having the most up to date version of Memrise, I’m at a loss to know what might be causing the problem. If it continues, try tagging @MemriseSupport and ask them to take a look for you.

Sorry, this is probabaly not much help.

Hi alanh,

Thanks for your reply! Yes, it’s this course indeed. I shared the same link on Facebook and on Whatsapp, but for some people the link automatically opened in the app (where they couldn’t add my course), or they ended up on a page with only the official memrise-courses for Russian speakers.

Hi again,

I deleted the course from all my devices and tried a few things. Got some strange results at first.

As before, I could open and start the course on the web version on my laptop and it synced OK to both the iOS app on my iPad and to the android app on my phone. But I found that, if I had either Memrise Labs or Beta turned on in my (laptop) settings, there were problems.

Having deleted it again, I could access, open and start the course on Safari on my iPad and it saved OK to my dashboard and synced OK to the iOS app.

Deleting it once again, I then tried accessing the course on the web browser (Chrome) on my android phone. Sometimes, when trying to log on to the Memrise website, it redirected me to the app (and opened your course) and sometimes it logged me onto the website. I logged off from the android app and tried again. From the website, I typed in your course’s url and was able to access the course OK. I started the course and it saved to my (web) dashboard and synched across to the android app OK.

I’m not sure what’s causing the issue but it might be best not to try accessing the course from the link. Instead, go via the web browser and then type in the course url; view the first couple of items and then exit and go to the relevant app version. Good luck!
