Hiragana vs Katakana

Alright, so Japanese is supposed to be teaching new students, or struggling students the language. However, in Japanese 1 they’re forgetting the essential other alphabet that the Japanese use: Katakana. This script is used for borrowed words, such as salad and ice cream. Looking up the characters is super easy and committing them to memory just like the other characters won’t hurt. I feel like Memrise isn’t supporting this alphabet for new learners even though they’re throwing in words that really need it.

Example: Orange
Memrise: おれんじ Katakana: オレンジ

It’s important to learn this now so in the future we don’t have to re-wire our brains.

If you want a detailed course, here’s a 3 hour Katakana course I created last year based on Heisig’s “Remembering the Kana”.

I agree though, if Memrise wants to promote their own course, they should provide katakana as part of it.

are you doing the old or the renewed Japanese course? (the icon pic is a :girl: or :bouquet:?)

The updated version of Japanese 1 - 3 consists of Hiragana, Katakana and Kanji.
