{Help} Streak lost due a blackout

Hello, until yesterday I was keeping my streak on 25 different courses, after I finish the 10° of them, I had a blackout in my house that last an hour ago from this message. Because of that, I lost my streak on 15 courses. Is there any way to recover that?
I apologize if this isn’t the right category, but I couldn’t find a help section unrelated to bugs in the app (which is not the case here)

All a “streak” is is a number of days in a row you did the course. What does it matter?

That number was like a record of what I was doing, without having to write it in other app, or a sort of goal I was doing since I started this year too, but anyways, I guess I will save at least the streak of the others ten courses. And I’m not the only one that give that importance to the streaks, just check all those threads when memrise has a server problem and people lost it. There should be something else to avoid this kind of issues, I don’t know

@WildSage, streaks matter a lot to me. It’s not just numbers it’s accomplishment to me and probably lots of people. Today I finished 360 days of continuance and I am very proud of it. If I weren’t there I would probably have given up a long time ago with my japanese languages. The streaks is what keeps me going.

@Lien, can you do something to restore @cagustin98 streaks?

I agree @WildSage - it is just a number. I only continue my “streak” on Duolingo as it is super-quick (10 pts - less than 5 minutes - per day keeps it going) and it is a record of the number if days I have spent seriously studying French (though not necessarily on DL as I use many resources).

Would I be upset if I lost it? No, I think I would survive just fine but I might find that I would visit that site more infrequently. That is, after all is said and done, the purpose of the “streak” - to draw users in and hold them there.

As this is was an exceptional situation it would be nice of Memrise to restore the streaks.

In the future, let’s hope Memrise gives you, say for every 14 days of an unbroken streak, a coin that you can trade in for those days you can’t learn/review to keep the streak. Now the system is a bit too unforgiving; got hit by the ground and can’t review because you have concussion? Too bad, you lost your streak.
That’s really a pity! Were you using the Web interface, or a phone (Andoroid, iPhone app)? I suppose when we use the app, it will upload the result later, with the time stamp of the moment you completed it.

I was just wondering, were you just less than an hour before the ‘streak dead-line’, otherwise after an hour you can still get your streak.
Yes, it doesn’t matter for the learning progress itself, but for some people it is very motivating to see that they were able to keep up! And if it broke (for whatever reason), yes, that can be de-motivating, especially if the streak count was high and that is demotivating. So, yes, for some of us, it can have a negative impact. If it didn’t matter at all, we perhaps wouldn’t have it.
That’s a great idea. They say goals need to be S.M.A.R.T., where the A is for Achievable. A mentor once explained that you shouldn’t set unforgiving goals, because you always might miss out once (for example due to illness). Also, some people keep a day of rest a week.

Say, one studys 52 weeks, Mon-Fri, 1 hour, diligently, why is that not a 1-year-streak? In my opinion it is! But then again, how do you program that, without people setting the goal to low, getting a streak for about everything, and then loosing the effect of a compulsory target before getting a streak-award.

I did’t expect so many replies, thanks to all. But I will continue with my current streak (1 day so far haha), I still have my previous streak in two courses, I can live with that

I do use Duolingo too, and I continue my 250 streak there thanks to the streak freeze option you have there. Also, the streak is shared by all the courses, while in Memrise there is one per course

In Android phone, but with WiFi (that turned off because the blackout, and no chance to use the mobile data)

Around 23:20, so i still had time. I should have an earlier schedule, since it take me 40-50 minutes to complete all the courses every day

Would be a great idea, but due the many different courses it might be difficult to do.

Congratulations!! Five more days and you will reach a year!

Meh. I closed my account at duo with a 500+ streak. A number isn’t going to keep me wasting my time. On memrise I’ve never maintained a streak and I come back and use it more often.

It isn’t the number it’s the way peiple are attaching meaning that isn’t there to it. Personally, I’d like memrise better if we could turn off all the gaming features.
Gaming features? For the courses I am doing, I’ve only: Learning new words, Classic Review, Speed review, Difficult Words, Listening and Meet the Natives on Android. I believe these are not games, but just learning new words. Or does my Android App miss something? Or is it a feature that we can turn off/on in the course edit?

Hi @GabrieleCramer-Knebe, thanks for the tag.
I’ll put @cagustin98 in touch with my colleague @MemriseMatty, who may be able to help.

Hi, I also just lost my streak of 140 days for joyo kanji course and roughly 125 for yotubato vocabulary course due to a blackout. The blackout out happened at about 1:30 pm here, and only got it back about 20 minutes ago. The dodo mobile tower was out too so I couldn’t even try logging on from the app. Phone got signal from the telstra operater, but not dodo who i’m with. I swear this is legitimate, i’ve lost a 272 day streak in the past on the joyo kanji course because I forgot about it, but I never said anything because of it. Please restore my streak.

Chiming in to say I lost my streak too. This could have been my own fudge up, but I felt like I was so sure that I at least hit my streak (cause I’ve been peeved that I lost my last 180+ streak to a time zone change I didn’t account for). I’m almost obsessive about it because I like this little gamey part of Memrise.

I will admit that I can’t be sure, because I’ve got other stuff in my life that takes priority in my brain space… but I felt so sure that I hit my daily goal.

Hi,

Streaks also work for me as a motivator, and I too, maintain around 10-15 streaks at any given time. But challenging times are ahead of me; the first one is the festive season and the second one is an overseas holiday planned for January 2018. Unfortunately, a few social occasions and entertaining will take precedence to learning at this time of the year, and I am almost resigned that I have to give up a few.

I am also a Duolingo user with over 1400 day streak. My target is 50pt/day but it only takes about 10 minutes to complete. I should be able to maintain this while transiting at airports even journeys take 18 hours. Duolingo offers “streak freeze” which is a great insurance for any unforeseen circumstances, but the best thing is that streak number is relating to the entire account, not the individual courses.

Recently I have lost 200+ streak on a Polyglots course (90h to complete). I must’ve mistaken the pop up for the added hint as the target complete pop up. Obviously it was not the first time to lose a streak but I was a little sad. But I got over it. Because in Memrise, streaks disappear (at least on the web version) when a course is complete, and I am telling myself to be light-hearted about it when I lose streaks. I wish Memrise introduces streak counts applicable to one’s account.

English is my second language; apologies if my sentences are awkward.

Best wishes for the festive season,

Hi! Just wanted to give you a heads up that the streak freeze doesn’t always work on Duolingo, I lost mine about a month ago despite the freeze… I wasn’t even close to 1400 days but it still managed to spoil my evening a little bit, so you might want to change your goal from 50 XPs to 10 during your trip, it helps me a lot when I travel. Happy Holidays!

Dear Lighthouse, sorry to hear that your streak freeze did not work on DL. I have only used it twice during my four year learning but it worked fine on both occasions. I would contact them if I were you

I might reduce my daily commitment back to 10XPs as of this weekend as Christmas holidays have started! Last minute shopping to do tomorrow, then family dinners to follow from 24th onwards!

Four year-old streak, now that’s a commitment and dedication! :open_mouth:

Yes, freeze had worked for me a couple of times as well. Funny thing is each previous occasion was by accident, I either didn’t keep track of time or some other unintentional reason, but the last time I simply wasn’t in the mood, so i checked that my freeze was in place and decided to forget about it… The next day there was no streak  I think that owl was upset with me for consciously ditching it, lol. I did contact them and attached screenshots but there was no reply…

I know what you mean about last minute shopping, although, in my country Christmas is celebrated on January 7 (orthodox Christians), so I have one more week for that stuff before New Year. Oh, and I no longer need to worry about loosing my streak, lol.

Have a very Merry Christmas and good luck!

For me the biggest reason I use memrise was because of the streaks, because when something has a streak I just instantly want to keep it up, when I once stopped a streak which was 100 days I simply didn’t feel any motivation to do that course again, so streaks help me motivate a lot . Now my current highest streak is 453 days .
