Help: How to quiz character pinyin, not just English translation?

Hi guys, I’ve made a course for my son’s Chinese school. However, the app only seems to quiz him on the English translation of the characters. Some of the characters have audio for them, but few. I have entered in pinyin for all of the characters but it never seems to quiz the pinyin. As consequence, he is learning the English meaning of the characters but he is unable to read or pronounce the characters in Chinese.

Based on everyone’s comments on how awesome Memrise is, I am assuming that I am doing something wrong here but I can’t seem to find any settings for this.

Perhaps somewhere I may be going wrong is how I have input the pinyin. I have input pinyin with tone markers “xuéxí” as opposed to pinyin with number tone markers “xue2xi2”.

Please help! Thanks!

Hello

If you’d like to test on both the English meaning and the pinyin, you need to clone each level in your course and change the testing direction of the cloned levels.

If you need help with how to do that, just let us know

Ok, yes I would like to do this. In fact, this should be a basic part of the system and I don’t think it should require any different settings or finagling to get it to do this. Being able to know the meaning of a character without know how to pronounce it is incredibly useless. I understand how something like Spanish or French there is no need to include this part because the language is written using the alphabet, but Chinese is entirely different and including pronunciation with the characters is incredibly important.

How is this done? Thanks!

I agree that it would be nice for the system to do this automatically, but Memrise hasn’t implemented it (at least not yet), so we do what we can

Anyway, first, go to Edit Course->Levels and click the “Duplicate” button on one of the levels. Then, expand the newly duplicated level and hit the little pencil icon next to the text “Test on English, prompt with Chinese.” You’ll want to change this to “Test on Pinyin, prompt with Chinese”.

As mentioned, the system doesn’t do this automatically yet, so you’ll need to duplicate each level and change the testing direction.

I do hope that Memrise one day implements a good system where this can be done automatically, but for now, that’s how you do this
