When I logged onto memrise today, I was greeted with the message that user created courses will be removed from the main website and moved off onto another website called decks. It also mentioned that user created courses will no longer be available on the app, but only on the mobile website. This looks like an attempted process to slowly to remove those courses entirely, as well as possibly limiting discovery from new users, and making people more used to the idea that they’re going to be a thing of the past. I’ve been paying for pro since 2015, but if user created courses really are removed, i’ll stop using memrise and i’ll not renew pro membership each year. Can we get an assurance from memrise that this is not the case, and that user created courses are a permanent feature of memrise?
I second this. The content offered by Memrise for certain languages is very less and it is indeed the community contributed content that enriches the experience. Also, I’m against the whole idea of keeping decks as just a website. I am sure Memrise will make it very mobile friendly but if you don’t have a native app for it, certainly functionalities (like “offline” decks) wouldn’t work
Loss of offline mode is terrible; I see that as a big part of what I paid for for the next year only recently
Not sure where to voice this,vI never use the forums but just came here to sign in and give an opinion. I’ve been paying for pro for about 2 years, and I go through stages of using Memrise heavily but don’t use it all the time. However, only about half of the courses I am engaged with are Memrise offical ones. The other half are community and actually where I usually focus. I actually find that the custom ones provide me with more relevant training as I am able to use flashcards which are based on other learning materials I use. I was over the moon when I found some of these courses, and it adds to the experience massively. I am entirely sure there are plenty of users in this position.
If Memrise are naive enough (or don’t value their users needs enough) to remove these and make them ‘web only’ through yet another login/app, then I think I will be canceling my subscription (which not long ago renewed.) This is an awful move and all it does is subtract from the learners experience. I can see no positive outcome from doing this and it just means that if Memrise can’t handle the current meta then clearly they are not prepared to be leaders in this industry. I’ve always liked memrise and remained loyal to it, the value was there even if you had to go on the full site to add community courses - but doing things like this just makes people look elsewhere. I’d like some feedback from Memrise directly but I don’t know if I’ll get any or where to post.
Just cancel the subscription and provide reviews in Apple App Store and Google Play store.
@AkiraKurusu yes you do have that assurance - we’re making a commitment to support community created courses on Decks forever.
You are not listening to the extensive feedback that has been provided multiple times today:
a)
people want to use an app (not an untested “mobile website”)
b)
people want an offline mode (and are prepared to pay for it). Many users are in areas with poor internet coverage/ behind firewalls (e.g. the whole of China) or want to use the app on transport (planes/ trains/ subways etc.)
You need to escalate these the above 2 points to your CEO asap.
Either clone the existing app with all features and call it “Decks” and include an offline mode.
OR leave things how they are.
What you are proposing IS BREAKING THE COMMUNITY.
Sorry Kevin. Don’t believe this. What consultation process with users was there before this decision? I suspect absolutely zero. For such a major decision people who pay their money should have been given some respect. This is a management issue and the management at Memrise has demonstrated themselves to be extremely arrogant and totally non-customer oriented.
Comments?
How long is forever, exactly? When you hear a company say “We’ll do x for free forever” , there has to be a catch. Your company doesn’t run on its own, so you will eventually see Decks as a hindrance in your process to make money.
