Came across this today, and it seems rather odd to me.
Gyuuniku is Beef as we all know, but for some reason I have to type it as Giyuuniku. Is this a mistake, or is it real, odd or not, to me it just does not seem quite right.

it’s because you have to tyoe 2 characters, which form one sound: a normal GI plus a small YU
This sounds like a problem with typing in romaji (western characters), as you typed it in your post, rather than in Japanese. (ぎゅうにく)
Memrise has a lot of weird issues with properly recognizing romaji, particularly with the little characters, it seems. I think the same happens with words that use the small “っ” to double the next consonant. Instead of typing “toppu” for “トップ”, for example, you would be expected to type “totsupu”, which is simply wrong.
I would strongly recommend installing and using an IME, so you can type in Japanese instead, and avoid such issues. This page should help:

I have IME installed, even had a little crack at it. Problem with me is my learning curve, it is rather shallow. I can carry on learning the way I am, or learn how to do the IME thing, which means memorising where all the Hirogana syllables are. I cannot learn two things at once, it just confuses me terribly.
I am bound to come across more problems such as this, it is sad to think the people that make these things know the problem, yet we the learners have to compensate. For instance I know Beef is Gyuuniku yet I have to write Giyuuniku, and as for yourself Toppu and Totsupu, in all honesty, it just makes no sense.
But yes, IME, it is installed, and I will get round to using it properly one day. But for now, I am happy in the sense I can read both Katakana and Hirogana, it will do for now.

you just have to type each character in roumaji
I see what you mean now. I was thinking it makes no sense, because you have to write out the whole of the wording in Roman, but not in Hirogana, then it dawned on me, in Hirogana Gyuu is made up of Gi combined with Yu. Silly me. I honestly need to learn to use the IME, it might make things easier in the long run.
