I started the Japanese 1 course about 2 weeks ago. I’m on Level 4. And it just changed from Furigana characters to ‘Japanese’ characters for entire words and phrases without teaching me anything about these new characters. Previously, the Furigana characters were explained and reviewed. These new characters are coming out of nowhere. Am I doing something wrong? I checked and I haven’t skipped any levels. This is very frustrating and makes me wish I hadn’t paid for this. Any help is appreciated.
You should probably switch courses. You can check the levels in a course to see what it covers. I dont have much experience with courses that dont have Kanji. Its kind of a must if you want to be able to read. If youre just in it for vocabulary you can try the courses by jlptbootcamp and skip the Kanji rounds. If you want to learn the Kanji there are courses that can help you with that.
I’m sorry to sound dumb here, but what courses should I take? I found out about level 0 (which is a stupid way to name a course), but that is just more Furigana. I would very much like to learn Kanji, but where in Memrise is that course located?
The first is all the Kanji in order of when it’s learned in Japanese grade schools. The second is Kanji you’re supposed to know for the JLPT N5 (N5 to N1, 5 being the easiest) test. It’s some of the easiest Kanji. This will teach you the English meaning but even the most common japanese words when written can include higher level Kanji.
I formatted my learning by the JLPT test which isn’t the best method. I learned words in hiragana and Kanji at the same time well before I started studying Kanji separately. If you use a japanese keyboard setting and can remember the pronunciation as long as you have a vague memory of the Kanji you can usually pull it out of the options available.

The problem is mainly because our official courses do not yet have the best way of teaching the Kanji in a specifically focused way, but also because of a recent bug where the pronunciation of the Kanji was hidden. This bug will be fixed in the coming weeks, so at least you will be able to see the reading when you first learn it. I’m sorry about the inconvenience.
