When to use “fu” and when to use “era” for “was?”
Italian 6, Lessons 11 & 12 seem to use them indiscriminately. Is that the correct grammatical procedure?

As far as I know one uses “fu” (passato remoto) when talking about something that happened once and a very long time ago. For instance:
Il primo Presidente del Consiglio italiano fu … - The first Italian prime minister was …
