French - Encore Tricoloure 2, Level 16: Phrases for "What about...?" (https://www.memrise.com/course/371675/encore-tricolore-2-3/16/)

Hi, I was confused as to the difference between “Si on + Verb in the Imperfect tense” and “On pourrait peut-être + infinitive” though they both mean “What about…?”. In which contexts are each of them used?

Hello.

You could say both in the same situations, but literally “si on…” corresponds to “what about…” and “on pourrait peut-être…” to “maybe we could…”.

Besides, but maybe you already know, the use of “on” for “we” is colloquial. It depends on where and to whom you are talking; if you are talking to a friend “on” is fine; in other situations better say “nous”. If I were talking to educated people with whom I am not familiar, I would rather say “nous pourrions peut-être…”.

Best,

Yves
